Aaron Glenn Finally Opens Up On Justin Fields Exit

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn opens up about the team's failed experiment with Justin Fields, while expressing hope for the quarterback's future in Kansas City.

The New York Jets took a bold leap in 2025 by bringing in quarterback Justin Fields, but the gamble didn't quite hit the jackpot. Fields' stint in New York was rocky, ending with a 2-7 record as a starter before he was benched. While his stats weren't terrible-seven touchdowns to just one interception-his average of 139.9 passing yards per game painted a clearer picture of the struggles.

Fields started strong with a standout performance against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1, but as the season progressed, his confidence seemed to wane. By the time the offseason rolled around, the Jets decided to part ways, sending him to the Kansas City Chiefs in a trade orchestrated by Darren Mougey.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn, however, is taking some of the heat for Fields' tough year. Speaking at the NFL's league owner meetings, Glenn acknowledged he could have done more to set Fields up for success.

"I didn't do enough to put him in a position to be successful," Glenn admitted. "That's my job as the head coach.

I think he's going to do well in Kansas City, I really do, because he's a good person, for one, and he's a good player. I think Andy Reid is going to do a good job with him."

Glenn's comments reflect a willingness to shoulder responsibility, recognizing that the decision to bring Fields in was a shared one between him and Mougey.

Looking ahead, the Jets might cross paths with Fields sooner than later. The Chiefs are on their 2026 schedule, and depending on when they meet, Fields could be starting if Patrick Mahomes is still on the mend from his ACL injury. This matchup could offer Fields a shot at redemption or allow the Jets to prove they're moving forward without him.

As we await the full schedule release in May, it’s a storyline that promises intrigue and perhaps a touch of poetic justice.
