Aaron Glenn and the Jets are staring at a chance that has been rare around Florham Park for a long time: a real shot to build early momentum and make the offseason buzz feel earned.
A lot of the national chatter coming into the year had New York pegged for only three or four wins. That’s the kind of outside noise the Jets have lived with for years. But a win over Jordan Love and the Packers on Sunday afternoon would force a different conversation in a hurry.
The most immediate prize is simple enough. The Jets are trying to get to 2-0 for the first time since 2015.
That alone wouldn’t lock them into anything, not with the Bills and Patriots sitting in the division, and a loss wouldn’t automatically doom them to a seventh straight double-digit-loss season either. Still, this is the sort of early test that can tell you a lot about where a team is headed.
And if the Jets do get there, it would do more than improve a record. It would reinforce the belief that Glenn and Darren Mougey have been building for months.
This wasn’t one of those offseasons where optimism felt forced. There was real excitement around the team, a sense that something different might actually be taking shape instead of the usual “maybe this time” routine.
Glenn has clearly won over his players, and he’s gotten plenty of credit for the energy he’s brought to the job as he tries to push his former team toward contention. His sideline celebrations have stood out, especially when measured against what Jets fans got used to under Adam Gase and Robert Saleh.
That connection showed up again in Tennessee, where traveling Jets fans made themselves heard late and chanted Glenn’s name while also going after Saleh in his Titans debut.
There’s also a practical reason New York should like its spot this week. The Jets are underdogs as of Thursday afternoon, but the Packers are dealing with some issues of their own. Micah Parsons is still out while recovering from a torn ACL, and Green Bay gave up 22 unanswered points in last week’s road loss to the Vikings.
In a league that loves to tell you what a 2-0 start usually means, the Jets have a chance to write a much better story for themselves. For a fanbase that’s waited through plenty of disappointment, that alone makes Sunday matter.
