In a thrilling showdown on Sunday, Gabriel Vilardi matched his career high by netting his 27th goal of the season, propelling the Winnipeg Jets to a shootout victory over the New York Rangers, 3-2. This win snapped the Jets' three-game losing skid, with captain Adam Lowry breaking his own scoring drought in the process.
Vilardi and Kyle Connor were clutch in the shootout, spoiling the NHL debut of Rangers’ promising goaltender, Dylan Garand. At just 23, Garand stood tall, turning away 35 of 37 shots during regulation and overtime, making a name for himself as one of the standout performers of the night.
Garand's most impressive moment came midway through the second period when he thwarted Connor on a shorthanded 2-on-0 breakaway. Shortly after, luck was on his side as Cole Perfetti’s close-range shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
Lowry’s goal, a result of a slick tic-tac-toe passing sequence with Perfetti, was a beauty that Garand had little chance of stopping. This marked Lowry's first goal since January 13, ending a 25-game dry spell.
For the Jets, backup goalie Eric Comrie was solid, making 27 saves during regulation and overtime, and coming up big with two more stops in the shootout.
Despite Garand's impressive debut and a power-play goal from Mika Zibanejad, the Rangers fell short, marking their 24th loss in 33 home games. Zibanejad, playing his 999th regular-season game, hit the 30-goal milestone for the first time since the 2022-23 season, his third overall. The soon-to-be 33-year-old Swede has been on a tear, scoring in three straight games and tying Adam Graves for the fourth-most goals in Rangers’ history with 280.
Adding to the Rangers' effort was Tye Kartye, a savvy waiver pickup from Seattle in late February, who also found the back of the net. However, the team has now dropped four consecutive games and sits at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
