Rangers Bring Another Wrinkle Into Islanders Home Opener

Could Cole Beaudoin's NHL debut be the spark that fuels the Rangers past their cross-town rivals in the season's first Battle of New York?

The Rangers are giving Cole Beaudoin his first NHL shot, and the timing puts the 20-year-old rookie right in the middle of a Battle of New York matchup with the Islanders.

New York recalled Beaudoin from the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, and he is now expected to make his debut against the Islanders with puck drop set for 7:30 Eastern on Oct. 6. The move comes as the Rangers look for another body up front after fourth-line center Joe Veleno was placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

Beaudoin has wasted no time making noise in Hartford. Through two games with the Wolf Pack this season, he has five points - one goal and four assists - and he also found the net against the Isles in the Sept. 22 preseason game. His pro debut was even louder: three points against the Lehigh Valley Phantoms on Oct. 3, followed by two assists the next day against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

That production has pushed him into the spotlight at just the right moment for a Rangers team already rolling. New York brings a three-game winning streak into Madison Square Garden and is trying to win four of its first five games for the 10th time in franchise history and the second time in three seasons.

Head coach Mike Sullivan made it clear the roster decisions are being driven by performance, not paperwork. Per Mollie Walker of the New York Post, Sullivan said, "The question is: Do we just put guys in the lineup and send guys down just because they're waivers exempt, or do we put the guys in the lineup that we think are going to give us the best chance to win?

We chose to make a decision based on the latter," Sullivan said. "We think the guys that are in the lineup are deserving to be in the lineup through their performance and their play."

There was another roster shakeup before the Islanders game as well, with defenseman Matthew Robertson clearing waivers and being assigned to Hartford.

Beaudoin has also already put a simple scouting report on himself out there. "That's my game to a T.

It's forecheck, hunt pucks and make plays," Beaudoin said recently on the offense he brings to the ice. "And I think that's kind of looked at as my offensive side of my game, and making plays, finding guys, shooting pucks when I get the chance."

The Ottawa native spent the previous four seasons in the OHL with the Barrie Colts, where he piled up 221 points in 236 games, including 91 goals and 130 assists.

Former Islanders Forward Already Facing Heat In Calgary

Maxim Tsyplakovs move to Calgary has quickly become one of those early-season storylines that can shift a players standing before the calendar really gets going. The former Islanders forward arrived in a trade package that sent Simon Nemec to the Flames and brought multiple draft picks plus prospect Etienne Morin to New Jersey, but the attention in Calgary now is less about the deal and more about how Tsyplakov fits into a lineup that is still taking shape.

His start has not helped his case. The struggles that followed him from last season have carried into the preseason and the opening stretch of 2026-27, and with Calgary managing just three goals in three games, there is already pressure on the club to look elsewhere for offense. In a rebuilding setting where younger players are pushing for NHL minutes, Tsyplakovs roster spot is beginning to feel less secure by the day. [Read more 🡒]

Islanders Just Saw A Fan Loyalty Surge They Had To Notice

A strong offseason response around the Islanders business side has given the organization real reason to pay attention. President of Business Operations Kelly Cheeseman said the clubs season-ticket base remained remarkably steady from one year to the next, a sign that the core fan group is still locked in even as the team keeps pushing to broaden its reach.

The bigger picture is just as encouraging for the franchises long-term plans. The Islanders have also seen more women engaging with the brand and have posted significant digital growth across their online platforms, giving the team more momentum as it rolls out ticket promotions and marketing efforts designed to build a younger, more involved fan base over the next five years. Islanders Just Gave Fans A Reason To Rethink This Team

Two games into the season, the Islanders already have a result that is hard to ignore: a 6-0 win over the Devils that has given an otherwise quiet start a much louder tone. After an offseason that did not generate much buzz and a round of low preseason projections, this is the kind of early jolt that can make people take a second look at a team they were ready to file away.

Victor Eklund was part of the offensive burst, getting on the scoresheet in a way that immediately matters for a young player trying to establish himself, while Ilya Sorokin backed it up with a dominant night in net. He turned away every shot he faced in the shutout, the sort of performance that can steady a team and make the rest of the league wonder whether the Islanders might be better than the consensus believed.
