Panthers Hit With Tough Sam Bennett Absence

Florida Panthers' star Sam Bennett's unexpected absence raises questions as the team faces the New York Islanders in a critical matchup.

The Florida Panthers are facing a challenge as they head into their matchup against the New York Islanders without one of their top scorers, Sam Bennett. Head coach Paul Maurice confirmed Bennett's absence for Saturday’s game, though he reassured fans that the issue isn’t a major concern.

Bennett has been a vital part of the Panthers' lineup this season, notching 25 goals and 29 assists over 70 games. With Aleksander Barkov sidelined for the entire season, Bennett stepped up as the team’s number-one center, clocking in a career-high average of nearly 18 and a half minutes on the ice.

At 29, Bennett is enjoying the most productive season of his career, building on a strong 2024-25 campaign where he recorded 51 points in 76 games. His performance in the playoffs was nothing short of spectacular, with 22 points in 23 games, earning him the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Panthers clinched their second consecutive Stanley Cup.

Bennett also represented Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off, contributing to their championship victory, and participated in the Milano Cortina Winter Olympics, bringing home a silver medal with an assist in five games.

Currently, Bennett is in the first year of an eight-year, $64 million deal with the Panthers, which includes a full no-movement clause until the 2029-30 season.

Despite a season riddled with injuries, the Panthers have shown resilience, accumulating 73 points over 71 games. However, they find themselves at the bottom of the Atlantic Division, fighting to turn things around as they navigate these challenges.
