NY Islanders Stunned by Canadiens After Third Period Meltdown

Islanders unravel in the third period as Canadiens surge to a decisive 7-3 victory, exposing critical defensive lapses.

The New York Islanders experienced a tough night on the ice, watching a tied game slip away in a challenging third period to fall 7-3 against the Montreal Canadiens.

Heading into the final frame, the Islanders had momentum on their side. Matthew Schaefer's one-timer from the point just 45 seconds in brought the game to a 3-3 tie. But from there, things took a turn.

Montreal seized control with four unanswered goals, exploiting defensive lapses and applying relentless pressure. Kaiden Guhle quickly regained the lead for the Canadiens at 3:17, followed by Juraj Slafkovský extending it midway through the period. Cole Caufield then put on a show, netting two late goals to cap off a five-point night and seal the victory.

Anders Lee reflected on the game, saying, “The other night it was too many battles that were lost. Tonight it was more they made plays through us, and we had a couple missed assignments.”

Earlier, the Islanders showed promise with goals from Emil Heineman and Simon Holmstrom, keeping them competitive through two periods. But the third period was a different story.

The Canadiens outperformed the Islanders with sharper execution and urgency, transforming a close contest into a decisive win in mere minutes.

In goal, Ilya Sorokin stopped 26 of 32 shots before being replaced late in the third period by David Rittich, who made three saves in relief.

This loss marks New York’s second consecutive defeat, impacting their standing in the Eastern Conference playoff race. With the postseason approaching, the Islanders find themselves with little room for error.

After briefly leveling the score, the Islanders couldn't withstand Montreal’s surge, highlighting how momentum can shift dramatically at this point in the season.

Ryan Pulock emphasized the need for focus, stating, “Once we gave up that one to give them the lead again in the third we just kind of broke down after that. What's important is a regroup in here. Tomorrow's huge, so that's where our focus has to be.”
