NY Islanders' Patrick Roy Reveals Game-Changing Moment in Loss to Canadiens

Islanders head coach Patrick Roy breaks down the turning points that led to a tough 7-3 defeat against the Canadiens, while looking ahead to a critical matchup against the Blue Jackets.

The New York Islanders let a winnable game slip through their fingers Saturday night, falling 7-3 to the Montreal Canadiens. Head coach Patrick Roy pinpointed a few crucial moments that turned the tide.

In the second period, the Islanders hit two posts, which Roy saw as the turning point. "We could have made it 3-1," he noted, reflecting on what might have been.

Instead, the Canadiens grabbed momentum late in the second. The Islanders managed to tie it up early in the third, but Montreal responded quickly, seizing control.

“We tied the game, but a bad bounce on that fourth goal shifted everything,” Roy explained. “Opening up more left us vulnerable, and they capitalized.”

This forced the Islanders into a more aggressive stance, a move Roy admitted was necessary but costly. “After their fourth goal, we tried to open up. They're a strong rush team and they made the most of those chances.”

With the game slipping away, Roy decided to pull starting goaltender Ilya Sorokin, keeping an eye on the bigger picture. “The decision was simple - he’s playing tomorrow,” Roy said. “We need to regroup because tomorrow is crucial.”

Despite the lopsided score, Roy maintained perspective. The Islanders are enduring a tough road stretch but remain in playoff contention. “If we win tomorrow, we’re seven and three in the last 10 games,” he pointed out.

The Isles will look to reset and refocus when they host the Columbus Blue Jackets in a pivotal matchup Sunday night at UBS Arena.
