Alexander Romanov's season with the New York Islanders has been a rollercoaster, to say the least. Fresh off signing an eight-year extension, Romanov had a sluggish start, mirroring the team's early struggles. Just as things seemed to be improving during a pivotal road trip, Romanov’s season took an abrupt halt.
The turning point came on November 18, during a tense matchup against the Dallas Stars. With the Islanders clinging to a narrow 3-2 lead late in the third period, Romanov was on the receiving end of a brutal cross-check from Mikko Rantanen. The hit sent him crashing into the boards, resulting in a shoulder injury that sidelined him with a daunting 5-6 month recovery timeline.
In a twist of fate, Rantanen himself faced time off the ice due to an injury sustained shortly after representing Finland at the Olympics. However, Stars’ GM Jim Nill has confirmed Rantanen’s imminent return, coinciding with their upcoming road trip, which kicks off against the Islanders.
“The plan is, hopefully, to get him in maybe one of those games towards the end of the trip,” Nill stated, hinting at a strategic return that might just bypass the Isles.
The tension between the two teams has been palpable since Romanov’s injury. Islanders' coach Patrick Roy was visibly furious at the time, vocally confronting Rantanen from the bench with a promise of retribution in their next encounter.
As the postseason looms, the Stars have already secured their spot, while the Islanders are still in the thick of the playoff race. Rantanen’s delayed return might be a tactical move for Dallas, sparing him from the charged atmosphere at Long Island. For the Islanders, facing the Stars without Rantanen could be a small but significant advantage.
Even without the anticipated on-ice fireworks, the energy in the arena will be electric. If the Islanders can capitalize on this opportunity and secure a win, it could be a defining moment in their push for the playoffs.
