Matt Coronato’s homecoming to Greenlawn was more than just a trip down memory lane; it was a chance for the Flames’ sharpshooter to reignite his scoring prowess at UBS Arena.
“It’s nice,” Coronato shared after the Flames’ morning skate, gearing up to face the Islanders. “Seeing family and having them watch me play in person is awesome.”
The Flames had a mixed week in New York, falling 4-0 to the Rangers before edging out the Devils 5-4. Yet, Coronato, the 23-year-old drafted 13th overall in 2021, was still searching for his scoring touch, entering Long Island goalless in 13 games. With 14 goals and 16 assists over 64 games, he’s had a dry spell that he’s eager to break.
Islanders coach Patrick Roy noted, “He’s a player to watch. His skating and net challenges make him a threat, especially here in New York.”
Coronato’s talent earned him a seven-year, $45 million extension after a stellar season with 24 goals and 23 assists. Flames coach Ryan Huska emphasized the importance of staying true to his game, especially with a supportive crowd in his hometown.
“Just keep shooting,” Huska advised. “He’s getting chances, and I’m confident a goal is coming soon.”
Coronato’s history at UBS Arena is promising. In a previous clash against the Islanders, he scored twice, helping the Flames to a 4-3 overtime victory-a memorable part of a successful New York trip last season.
Despite missing the playoffs last year due to tiebreakers, the Flames are determined to turn things around, though they currently sit 10 points out of a playoff spot. Coronato’s effort is undeniable, ranking second on the team with 160 shots, even if his shooting percentage is a modest 8.8%.
“I feel like it’s coming,” Coronato said with optimism. “Stay relaxed, play your game, and the goals will follow.”
With family and friends filling the stands, there’s no better stage for Coronato to find the back of the net again. “Playing in front of those who helped me get here is special,” he reflected. “Having childhood friends and high school buddies here means a lot.”
