Islanders Suddenly Need Isaiah George In A Spot That Matters

Isaiah George gets a pivotal chance to step up for the Islanders' defensive line amid Ryan Pulock's unexpected absence.

The Islanders have turned to Isaiah George for help on the blue line.

New York recalled the 22-year-old defenseman from AHL Hamilton on Friday, a move prompted by Ryan Pulock’s upper-body injury. Pulock was hurt early in Thursday’s 4-3 overtime win over the Wild, played just 51 seconds, and is expected to miss at least a game or two, beginning with this afternoon’s home game against the Oilers, according to the New York Post.

Matthew Kessel had been the club’s only extra defenseman. DeBoer is scheduled to speak with the media around 12:30 p.m.

ET before the game, per Isles reporter Stefen Rosner.

George was one of New York’s final training camp cuts and was sent to Hamilton on September 27, the same day the Islanders signed veteran Logan Stanley to a one-year deal. At the time, head coach Pete DeBoer pushed back on the idea that the assignment was a setback, drawing a comparison to Devon Toews, who spent three years in college hockey and played 125 AHL games before establishing himself. “It’s a journey to become an NHL defenseman, and he took a step,” DeBoer said at the time.

His time in the AHL got off to a rough start. George, who wore a letter for the Hammers on opening night, exited Hamilton’s October 9 home opener with an upper-body injury, and Hammers head coach Jay McKee later said the team did not expect him back anytime soon. He returned to Hamilton’s lineup on Thursday.

The Islanders selected George in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, 98th overall. He debuted in the NHL as a 20-year-old in 2024-25 and appeared in 33 games that season, finishing with one goal and four assists while averaging a little more than 15 minutes per game.

Injuries limited him to four NHL games last season, and he now has one goal and five assists in 37 career NHL games. George is in the final year of his entry-level contract, carries an $863K cap hit and is on track for restricted free agency next summer.

Islanders Could Soon Face A New Twist With Key Russian Players

International hockey is suddenly back in play for Russia after a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport overturned the IIHFs ban on Russian participation, saying the security concerns had not been backed by enough evidence. The decision clears Russia to return to the World Junior Championship in Edmonton and Red Deer, and it also opens the door for future events such as the World Championship and the 2030 Olympics.

For the Islanders, the ripple effect could be felt in a very specific way. Russian players in the organization may now have a path back to international tournaments, changing the summer and winter schedules for a club that has long had a notable Russian presence in its pipeline and on its roster. The full impact will depend on how those upcoming events are handled, but this ruling adds a new layer to the conversation around who might be available, and when. [Read more 🡒]

Islanders Blue Line Suddenly Has An Opening Fans Need To Watch

The Islanders had a short-term answer ready when they needed another body on the blue line, recalling Isaiah George from AHL Hamilton after Ryan Pulock went down with an upper-body injury. Georges stay was brief, though, and the move underscored just how quickly the defense picture can change when a regular like Pulock is out of the lineup.

Pulock is expected to miss two to four weeks, which leaves the Islanders juggling their depth while waiting for a more permanent solution to settle in. George was sent back to Hamilton after the recall, but the door does not appear closed on another call-up soon, making this one of the more important roster situations to follow in the coming days. Islanders Suddenly Have A Veteran Trade Question They Cant Ignore

With the Islanders dealing with injuries and trying to keep their roster afloat, the conversation around possible veteran help has started to shift from wish list to practical cap math. Three names have surfaced as speculative options if another club needs to move money and New York is willing to take on depth in the process, with Alex Killorn, Evan Rodrigues and Tyler Seguin all mentioned as potential fits for a team looking to patch holes without making a splashy swing.

The appeal is obvious from the Islanders side: proven veterans, some versatility and a chance to stabilize the lineup without overcommitting long term. But these kinds of ideas live in the gray area until teams actually engage, and one of the more intriguing possibilities comes with a major contractual obstacle that could complicate any path to Long Island. For now, it is less a deal in motion than a reminder that the Islanders may have to keep one eye on the trade market while they wait for their injured players to sort themselves out. [Read more 🡒]
