Islanders Sign Scott Reedy After Mysterious 11-Month Absence From Hockey

After nearly a year away from the game, former NHL prospect Scott Reedy gets a shot at reviving his career with the AHL's Bridgeport Islanders.

Scott Reedy is getting another shot at pro hockey, and it comes by way of a professional tryout with the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders. The 24-year-old center hasn’t played a game this season, but his return marks the end of an 11-month layoff from competitive action-and nearly four years removed from his last NHL appearance.

Reedy, a fourth-round pick by the San Jose Sharks back in 2017, built a solid foundation during his four years at the University of Minnesota. His final collegiate season in 2020-21 was especially strong-he was a point-per-game player and earned All-Star honors, showing off the offensive instincts and two-way reliability that made him an intriguing pro prospect.

After turning pro, Reedy split time between the Sharks and their AHL affiliate in 2021-22. In the NHL, he carved out a role in the bottom six, notching seven goals and two assists over 35 games while averaging just over 11 minutes of ice time per night.

At the AHL level, he was even more impressive-posting 18 goals and 27 points in just 38 games. That kind of production turned heads and sparked some real hope that he could stick as a depth forward at the NHL level.

But the opportunity never fully materialized. The following season, Reedy’s numbers dipped-five goals and 15 points across 38 AHL games-and he was eventually traded to the Dallas Stars.

Injuries quickly became the storyline. From the time he arrived in Texas in March 2023 through the end of his contract in 2024, Reedy was limited to just 30 games with the AHL’s Texas Stars.

Still, when he was healthy, he showed flashes-scoring 11 goals and putting up 17 points in that span.

After the Stars chose not to extend a qualifying offer, Reedy found himself without a contract heading into the 2024-25 season. He eventually landed a tryout with the Milwaukee Admirals, the Nashville Predators’ AHL affiliate, in December. In 25 games there, he chipped in four goals and nine points-modest numbers, but enough to keep his name in the mix.

Now, with just a couple of months left in the current AHL season, Reedy is hoping to make the most of this new opportunity in Bridgeport. The Islanders’ affiliate has taken a noticeable step forward this year after a brutal 15-50-7 finish last season. They’re hovering around the .500 mark and have shown signs of life, which could give Reedy the kind of environment he needs to re-establish himself.

At 6-foot-2 with speed and a history of offensive upside, Reedy still brings tools that teams value. The question now is whether he can stay healthy and make enough of an impact to earn a longer look. For a player who's battled back from setbacks and kept grinding, this tryout in Bridgeport might just be the fresh start he’s been waiting for.
