The Islanders had to climb out of a 2-0 first-period hole, and for a long stretch it looked like they might actually do it. They just couldn’t finish the job. Brandt Clarke scored the overtime winner, giving the Kings a 3-2 victory after New York forced the game past regulation with a strong push and a pair of goals from Victor Eklund and Matthew Schaefer.
For New York, the night started ugly in goal. Semyon Varlamov was beaten twice by Artemi Panarin in the opening period, and both shots were the kind he probably wanted back.
The Islanders did get an early power play when Scott Laughton was called for holding, but they didn’t convert, and Panarin made them pay shortly after with the first goal. He struck again later in the period to put the Kings ahead 2-0.
The Islanders still had enough response to keep this from turning into a runaway. Victor Eklund kept making plays along the boards and looked like he belonged more and more with every shift.
He helped create chances throughout the game, including a strong sequence with Matt Kessel that nearly got the puck across the line before Mikey Anderson dove in to stop it. Eklund also won a battle from Konstas Helenius on a shift that led to one of New York’s better looks early.
The real swing came in the second period, when the Islanders tilted the ice hard in their favor. They outshot the Kings 17-9 in the frame and spent most of it pressuring Darcy Kuemper, even if the puck stubbornly refused to go in. Heineman and Eklund created a 2 on 1, Brayden Schenn rang one off the post, and Simon Holmstrom had a chance in the slot that Kuemper turned away.
Then the game started to open up. Adrian Kempe was sprung on a breakaway after Schaefer took him down, but Varlamov bailed the Islanders out by stopping the penalty shot.
Not long after, Brian Dumoulin tripped Emil Heineman, and New York finally cashed in on the power play. Victor Eklund got the goal, with the puck trickling past Kuemper to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Islanders kept pushing from there, and eventually the pressure paid off again. Seven minutes into the third period, Jared Wright and Schaefer had a late sequence that sent both to the box, and before that could settle down the Islanders found their equalizer. Brayden Schenn moved the puck to Logan Stanley, Stanley found Schaefer in space, and Schaefer buried his first goal of the season to tie it 2-2.
That goal also put Schaefer in some rare company, tying him with Bobby Orr for second-most goals by a teenage defenseman. No small thing.
New York finished regulation with 42 shots on Kuemper, but couldn’t find the one that would have turned the night into a full comeback. Varlamov had to make a few key stops in the third to keep things level, and the Islanders even went to overtime for the first time this season at UBS Arena.
In the extra session, Bo Horvat got a shot on Kuemper, but once Los Angeles gained possession, the Kings controlled the rest. Adrian Kempe had a good look stopped by Varlamov, but Clarke finished the play for the winner.
The Islanders came away with a point, extending their streak to points in their last five games, and they’ve managed to keep looking solid even with the injuries up front. Still, this one felt like a game they could have had.
Mat Barzal was missed in 3 on 3, and the difference showed when the game opened up late. Eklund, though, keeps giving them more to like.
He had a strong night overall, and he’s starting to look more comfortable in the NHL each time he steps on the ice.

Sabres Fans Should Watch This Defense Market Twist Closely
Scott Mayfields name has started to surface in a defense market that could get crowded quickly, and the timing makes him an intriguing piece for anyone looking to shore up the blue line. The Islanders defenseman still carries a full no-movement clause this year, and with three years left on his deal, he would not be the kind of easy add that teams can simply slide into place without a broader conversation.
What makes the situation worth watching is the overlap between teams seeking defense help and players like Mayfield who may not be in a straightforward spot on their current roster. He has been healthy scratched often recently, while Drew Doughtys situation in Los Angeles adds another layer to the market, since the veteran is a pending unrestricted free agent who has hired an agent and says he would be open to a team-friendly arrangement to stay with the Kings even as he admits the club could decide to move on. UBS Arena Is Making A Behind The Scenes Bet Fans Will Notice
UBS Arena is taking a behind-the-scenes step that could matter to the people keeping the building running on game nights. The venue has added a new employee benefit focused on financial wellness, giving workers access to tools that can help them manage budgets and financial goals while also offering no-fee options to tap into wages they have already earned.
The move fits into a wider effort by Oak View Group to expand financial flexibility across its venue network, and it shows how the business side of a modern arena is changing alongside what fans see in the stands. For Islanders supporters, it is the kind of staffing move that does not show up on the scoreboard, but can shape the atmosphere and stability of the place they call home. [Read more 🡒]
Islanders May Have Found The Spark Their Offense Desperately Needed
A few weeks ago, Peter DeBoer tried a different approach with Simon Holmstrom, bumping him down to the fourth line in an effort to give the young winger a mental reset. The move was temporary, though, because injuries elsewhere quickly forced Holmstrom back into a top-six role, and the Islanders have been better for it as he has settled in next to Bo Horvat and Kyle Palmieri.
Since rejoining the first line, Holmstrom has started to look like a different player, giving New York a much-needed boost at a time when the offense has been searching for answers. He has chipped in multiple goals in recent games and helped fuel consecutive wins, giving the Islanders at least one encouraging sign as they get ready to face the Los Angeles Kings. [Read more 🡒]
