Islanders Recall Isaiah George After Key Defenseman Goes Down

As the Islanders face pivotal games in their playoff push, Isaiah George is recalled as a strategic insurance measure amidst injury concerns and potential career implications.

The New York Islanders have called up defenseman Isaiah George from the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders, stepping in to fill the gap left by Ryan Pulock's lower-body injury. Pulock is sidelined on a day-to-day basis, so George’s presence will help bolster the defense during this critical stretch.

George is no stranger to the NHL roster, having played 33 games last season and appearing in two this year. His last stint with the team was in late January, with his most recent game on January 26.

At 22, George has been a cornerstone for Bridgeport, playing in the top-four defensive pairing and contributing on special teams. This season, he’s set a personal best with 17 points in 45 games, though his scoring rate has dipped slightly from last year.

However, offense isn't the main focus of his game.

With Pulock out, Adam Boqvist, the 2018 No. 8 overall pick, returned to action and made an impact by assisting on the game-winning goal against the Columbus Blue Jackets. While George is now available, it seems he might not see ice time unless further injuries occur. The Islanders are clinging to the Eastern Conference’s final Wild Card spot, just one point ahead of the Detroit Red Wings, who have a game in hand.

Upcoming games against Chicago, Dallas, and Florida are crucial, and the Islanders can't afford to lose ground. George's recall seems more about providing depth than an immediate lineup change.

If George does get the chance to play, these high-pressure games could significantly impact his professional trajectory. With another year on his entry-level contract, George faces a financial challenge next season, as his AHL salary stands at $82.5K without signing bonuses. Performing well in any NHL appearances could be key for him to secure a more stable position and financial future with the Islanders.
