The Anaheim Ducks may need more than cap room to get Cutter Gauthier signed, and the New York Islanders could end up being part of the solution.
Gauthier was a huge reason Anaheim pushed past expectations and reached the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the first time since 2018. At 22, he scored 41 goals and emerged as one of the league’s most dangerous finishers. Even with the 2026-27 season just over a month away, he still does not have a contract.
According to reports, Pat Verbeek and the Ducks put a four-year, $13 million AAV offer in front of Gauthier, but he and his camp turned it down. There has also been speculation that the Islanders could try to swoop in with an offer sheet, though the cost of four first-round picks makes that path a tough sell.
A more realistic way the Isles could be involved is by helping Anaheim clear the money needed to finish the deal.
The Ducks currently have $12.8 million in cap space, according to CapWages, but Gauthier is believed to be seeking more than $14 million per year. That means someone already on the roster would have to go, and Chris Kreider is the name that stands out.
Kreider, 35, got off to a strong start in his first season with Anaheim, scoring nine times in the team’s first nine games of the 2025-26 season. He is not the same player who scored 52 goals for the NY Rangers in 2021-22, but he could still bring real value to the Islanders.
His speed is still good enough to keep up with players like Mat Barzal and Matthew Schaefe, and with Anders Lee gone, the Islanders are missing one of the NHL’s better net-front presences. Kreider has spent much of his career making a living around the crease, cleaning up rebounds and finishing plays near the goal.
Kreider is in the final year of his current contract, with a $6.5 million cap hit and $5 million in actual money owed. The Islanders currently have $3.9 million in cap space, though that number could rise with a few straightforward moves. If Anaheim is as motivated as it appears to be, moving Kreider might not cost much at all - maybe a seventh-round pick, or even future considerations.

Oliver Wahlstroms path back to the Islanders is still very much open, even if it no longer looks like the straightforward NHL story that once seemed to come with being a first-round pick. The winger remains unsigned, and there have been discussions between his agent and the Islanders about a possible return to the organization, giving him at least a chance to reconnect with the team that drafted him.
The most realistic next step appears to be a contract that gets him into the mix at training camp, where he would have to earn his way back into the picture.
