The Islanders have filled a key front-office spot as their AHL operation settles into a new home in Hamilton, Ontario.
On Monday, the team announced that former Bruins executive Evan Gold has been hired as an assistant general manager and as GM of the Hamilton Hammers, the Islanders’ AHL affiliate. Gold steps into a setup that still includes Ryan Bowness, Steve Pellegrini and Chris Lamoriello as assistant GMs under Islanders executive vice president/GM Mathieu Darche.
Lamoriello, who handled the AHL GM role while the affiliate was based in Bridgeport, Connecticut, is shifting his focus. He’ll work more closely with the amateur, college and pro scouting staffs while staying involved in player personnel decisions.
Gold arrives with a long track record in hockey operations. The 46-year-old spent the last 12 seasons with Boston after more than eight seasons in the Capitals’ hockey operations department. Since 2023, he had been running the Bruins’ AHL affiliate in Providence, and last season that club finished an AHL-best 54-16-2-0 for 110 points.
“Evan brings a rare combination of experience, intelligence and results to our hockey operations department,” Darche said in a statement. “Over the past several years, he has exceled in nearly every facet of building a successful franchise at the NHL and AHL levels.”
Gold and Darche also share a McGill connection. Both earned their undergraduate degrees there in Montreal. Gold later added both an MBA and a law degree from the University of Toronto.
“My family and I could not be more excited to be joining the Islanders organization,” Gold said in a statement. “I am incredibly grateful to Mathieu and the entire Islanders ownership group for the opportunity to be part of such a respected franchise and to help build a Stanley Cup champion on Long Island.”
