Matthew Schaefer won’t be wearing the captain’s “C” for the New York Islanders, but the 19-year-old defenseman is already getting a clear sign of how the organization views him.
Bo Horvat had already been named captain, leaving the Islanders’ alternate-captain group as the real point of interest. Pete DeBoer settled on Ryan Pulock, Kyle Palmieri and Brayden Schenn, and Schaefer joined that group as well.
That choice says plenty about where the Islanders think this is headed. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft made a fast climb into the team’s core during his rookie season, and leadership talk followed almost immediately. The Islanders considered him too young to be captain after Anders Lee’s departure, but still wanted him in an official leadership role.
The result is an “A” for a player who is just 19, and a chance to ease into that responsibility without handing him the full weight of the room.
The decision also stands out because of the names left out. Mathew Barzal has been with the Islanders since his NHL debut in 2017, and Casey Cizikas is entering his 16th season in the organization.
Neither has regularly worn a letter for New York. Cizikas is 22 games shy of 1,000 for his career, all with the Islanders, and could hit that mark later this season if he stays healthy.
Schaefer doesn’t have anything close to that kind of résumé yet.
Still, the Islanders clearly aren’t treating experience as the only currency that matters here. They decided 19 was too young for the captaincy, but not too young for a leadership letter. And with the way they’ve invested in Schaefer as a major piece of their future, this likely won’t be the last time he wears one.
