Two of the New York Islanders’ top young prospects got a summer spotlight in Chicago, where Kashawn Aitcheson and Cole Eiserman were invited to the NHLPA Rookie Showcase at Blackhawks Ice Center.
The annual Upper Deck event brought together some of the league’s most promising names, including 2026 first-overall pick Gavin McKenna and Porter Martone of the Philadelphia Flyers. This year’s showcase, which had been held in Washington DC in recent years, shifted to Chicago at the practice facility of the Blackhawks.
For the Islanders, Aitcheson and Eiserman were there for more than just the photo op. The event also gave them a first look at what their initial Upper Deck trading cards will look like, while letting them take part in the kind of relaxed summer setting that comes with being one of the game’s rising talents.
Aitcheson, who went 17th overall in 2025, and Eiserman, selected 20th overall in 2024, are expected to start the 2026-27 season with the Hamilton Hammers, the franchise’s first year in existence. Both have NHL debuts in their sights, and there’s a real chance each gets that chance sometime during the coming season.
The Islanders were also represented at last summer’s showcase by Matthew Schaefer and Marc Gatcomb, who recreated an iconic Step Brothers image featuring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.
Beyond the lighter moments, the prospects also heard from Kyle Okposo, the former Islander and Stanley Cup winner, who shared the kind of perspective only a long career can bring.
“At the end of the day, they’re young. They don’t really know what’s coming at them, most of them,” said Okposo. “I was the same way, so I’m trying to use that perspective that I had, and playing for 17 years, now being out of the game also, and understanding more of how this side of the game works.”

Matthew Schaefer did more than just give the Islanders hope as an 18-year-old rookie.
