Matthew Schaefer may already be one of the faces of the New York Islanders, but he’s not forcing the next step in the leadership ladder.
After going No. 1 overall in 2025, Schaefer has quickly become a central figure for the Islanders’ future. Bo Horvat was named the club’s 16th captain in franchise history in September, taking over after Anders Lee left for the Utah Mammoth on a three-year, $16.2-million deal. Schaefer, meanwhile, was added as an alternate captain this year along with Brayden Schenn, joining Kyle Palmieri and Ryan Pulock in wearing the “A.”
That has naturally raised the question of whether Schaefer is the next in line for the “C.” For now, though, the 19-year-old says he’s not rushing it.
“It would be such an honor [to be captain]," Schaefer previously told NHL.com at the 12th annual Smilezone Foundation Celebrity Golf Tournament at Lionhead Golf Club on Monday. "There have been so many great [Islanders captains], but at the end of the day we have so many leaders like Bo Horvat, Brayden Schenn who have all been captains and are all our leaders too. I'm still young so I'm in no rush."
Schaefer became the youngest player in franchise history to be given a letter, and his focus is on soaking up what the veterans around him bring every day.
"I want to learn from those guys and become the best version of myself I can be," Schaefer had also said. "I'm excited for the year and I want to focus on our team.
It doesn't really matter about [the captaincy] because we have so many leaders in the room. Once you start the season, everyone is going to step up and everyone has a voice."
The production has already backed up the buzz. Schaefer is the reigning Calder Trophy winner, becoming the first unanimous choice for the award in 33 years across 198 ballots. He has 68 points in his career so far, with 24 goals and 44 assists, and he’s added nine points in 10 games this year.
His 2025-26 season was especially impressive. Schaefer led all rookies in average time on ice, power-play goals with eight, and shots on goal with 222, while tying for first in goals and overtime goals with two.
Horvat, the team’s current captain, brings a different kind of leadership pedigree. He was captain of the Vancouver Canucks from the 2019-20 season until he was traded to the Islanders on Jan. 30, 2023.

Islanders Can Prove A Lot Fast On This Road Trip
A tough early test is waiting as the Islanders head out on a road trip that opens against the Dallas Stars and continues in Minnesota, with both opponents viewed as Stanley Cup contenders. It is the kind of trip that can tell a team plenty about itself in a hurry, especially for a club that has started 5-3-2 and is trying to keep building while away from home.
Dallas brings an added layer of intrigue because it is Peter DeBoers first game against his former team, and the matchup carries some extra edge with Mikko Rantanen in the picture. The Islanders will also have to navigate the trip short-handed up front, with several forwards out injured, so the challenge is not just the quality of the opposition but the depth test that comes with it. Islanders Are Surviving One Problem Better Than Anyone Expected
The Islanders latest overtime loss to the Kings did little to change the bigger picture around them, because the early-season storyline still centers on how quickly they have settled into Peter DeBoers new system. New York is 5-3-2 and sitting in a playoff spot in the Metro Division, a decent place to be after a stretch that has included key absences and plenty of lineup juggling. Mathew Barzal and Alexander Romanov have both been out, and the team has had to keep building chemistry on the fly while trying to stay afloat on both ends of the ice.
Peter DeBoer has been encouraged by how fast the group has adapted, especially given the injury list and the disruption that comes with teaching a new structure in-season. The challenge now is whether the Islanders can keep holding their place in the standings while waiting for more bodies to return, because the margin for error gets thinner when the offense and defense are both short-handed. For now, the early response to the system has bought them time, even if the long-term test is still ahead. [Read more 🡒]
Bo Horvat's Start Has Islanders Fans Wondering How High This Can Go
Bo Horvat has wasted no time setting the tone for the Islanders this season, and his start is exactly the kind of early production that gets attention around the league. Through the opening stretch, the captain has been driving offense at a point-per-game clip, a reminder that his ceiling has never really been in question when he finds a rhythm.
The bigger question is how much more there is to come if the current system keeps unlocking chances for him. Horvat has already shown he can pile up points at a high level, including a career-best 70-point season in 2022-23, and the conversation around him only gets more interesting if the lineup eventually gets healthier and the pieces around him fall into place.
