Kashawn Aitcheson is giving the Islanders exactly what they hoped to see when they used a first-round pick on him in the 2025 NHL Draft: a defenseman who brings a mean edge to the ice.
Mathieu Darche said Aitcheson reminded the organization of that trait again during rookie camp, even if he caught himself a little in how he described it.
"He likes violence on the ice," Darche said before quickly reconsidering his choice of words. "I shouldn't say violence, but he likes to be physical, right?"
That physical presence has been easy to spot. Aitcheson is coming off another strong junior season and is now stepping into his first professional year with more expected of him than ever before.
Darche had a front-row view of the progress last season, including Aitcheson’s run in the OHL Finals. "He had an outstanding season," Darche said. "We're very high on him as a prospect, but let's see how he plays."
That last part matters most for the Islanders. Aitcheson may be one of the better names in their prospect pool, but Darche isn’t treating camp like a make-or-break deadline for forcing him into the NHL right away.
"If he forces us, good," Darche said. "And if not, there's nothing wrong also with playing in the AHL."
The rookie games offered another glimpse of why the Islanders are intrigued. Darche said Aitcheson played well and showed off the kind of dimension that separates him from a lot of other young defensemen.
"He's not afraid to mix it up, let's just say," Darche said.
Still, there’s a difference between handling junior forwards and matching up against NHL talent. That’s the next test for Aitcheson, and the Islanders aren’t going to rush the process if he isn’t ready.
If his path starts in Hamilton, Darche doesn’t view that as a setback. "You never get to the NHL too late, but you can get there too early," he said. The Islanders are leaving the door open - and if Aitcheson pushes it open himself during camp, they’ll be ready to let him through.
