Islanders Fans Just Shaped A New Piece Of Team Identity

Islanders fans make history as they unite to craft the team's next iconic third jersey, with the Navy Lighthouse design set to light up the 2027-28 season.

The New York Islanders have picked their first fan-designed third jersey concept, and the winner is Navy Lighthouse for the 2027-28 season.

That choice came out of an enormous response from the fan base, with 80,490 design submissions pouring in during the club’s inaugural fan-driven Third Jersey contest. The Islanders say this is the first time in NHL history that a team has leaned on its supporters to help create an official on-ice sweater.

Now the real design work begins. The Islanders and Fanatics will take the winning digital submission and turn it into a full NHL-ready uniform, while also reviewing other ideas fans sent in during the voting process. The team says the finished jersey will stay true to the winning concept but still has to satisfy league standards before it can debut at UBS Arena in 2027-28.

The fan who created the winning design won’t just get bragging rights. The organization will honor that person with a team-signed version of the new jersey and tickets to its first on-ice appearance during the 2027-28 season.

“The Islanders would like to thank every fan who contributed a design, shared their feedback, and participated in the voting process to help shape the future of the franchise’s visual identity,’’ said Kelly Cheeseman, President of Business Operations for the Islanders and UBS Arena. “This contest was launched to break down traditional barriers, giving the fans a direct voice in shaping our new look. We are excited to move forward and create the full uniform that our fanbase will be proud to call theirs.”

Islanders Are Bringing Back A Controversial Look At A Strange Time

The NHLs new Hometown Remix collection is set to give all 32 teams special edition uniforms, and for the Islanders it is bringing back one of the franchises most debated looks. The fisherman logo is expected to return on a jersey for the 2026-27 season, giving the club another turn with a design that has long stirred strong opinions among fans and observers alike.

What makes the timing especially interesting is that this will be a one-season uniform, separate from the fan-designed third jersey currently up for voting for 2027-28. The upcoming fisherman look is expected to resemble the version the Bridgeport Islanders wore last season more than the original 1990s sweater, which adds another layer to a throwback that is being revived in a very modern way. Islanders Could Be Giving Oliver Wahlstrom One More Shot

Oliver Wahlstroms path back to the Islanders is still very much open, even if it no longer looks like the straightforward NHL story that once seemed to come with being a first-round pick. The winger remains unsigned, and there have been discussions between his agent and the Islanders about a possible return to the organization, giving him at least a chance to reconnect with the team that drafted him.

The most realistic next step appears to be a contract that gets him into the mix at training camp, where he would have to earn his way back into the picture. His NHL role is still unsettled, and what happens from there would depend on how he looks in camp and how crowded the roster battle becomes once the season gets close. [Read more 🡒]
