The New York Islanders were never going to be mistaken for one of the NHL’s center-rich powers, but the latest ranking of their top-six pivots still feels off.
The Athletic’s Harman Dayal slotted the Islanders into Tier 6, which he defined as below-average top-six center duos. His evaluation was built around Bo Horvat and Brayden Schenn, but that’s where the picture starts to blur. It doesn’t line up with how the Islanders appear to be setting up under new head coach Pete DeBoer.
DeBoer has already made it clear he sees Mathew Barzal back at center, where he’s spent much of the last two seasons on the wing. If Barzal is indeed the Islanders’ second-line center, the entire conversation changes.
Dayal had plenty of praise for Horvat, calling him a steady two-way presence, but he stopped short of putting him in true top-line territory. “Horvat is a low-end 1C,” Dayal wrote. “He's a terrific all-around player with top-notch goal-scoring ability, size, elite faceoffs, and reliable defensive play, but he's produced at a 65-points-per-82-games pace over the last three years, which simply isn't star-caliber.”
The real issue is the second spot. Dayal projected Schenn there and pointed to the 35-year-old’s 39-point season as evidence that he’s better suited for a third-line role now. If Schenn is the No. 2 center, that criticism makes sense.
But Horvat and Barzal is a different animal entirely.
That pairing still wouldn’t put the Islanders in the same class as Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl or Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson. Even so, labeling Horvat and Barzal as a below-average duo is a tough sell. If both stay healthy, that looks far more like an above-average center group - and possibly something better.

When NHL free agency opened, Patrik Laines name briefly surfaced in Islanders circles, but the interest never sounded especially aggressive. New York already has a surplus of forwards, and with roster spots and cap decisions still being sorted out around the league, the club does not appear to be pushing hard to add another scorer at this stage.
Laines market may not be settled yet, though, and that leaves the door cracked open if his search drags on. Islanders Face A Franchise Defining Choice On Proven Scoring Help
Kirill Marchenkos name has started to surface in trade chatter, and that alone is enough to put the Islanders in an uncomfortable spot. The Blue Jackets forward is viewed as a proven scoring help option, which makes him appealing to a team that could use more offense, but the price tag is expected to be steep enough to force real soul-searching in New York.
The Islanders are still trying to rebuild their prospect pipeline, and that makes any aggressive pursuit a complicated fit for a front office that has stressed patience and a longer view. General manager Mathieu Darche has leaned hard into that approach, so even if Marchenko remains the kind of player who would draw interest, this looks like the sort of deal that would have to clear a very high bar before New York seriously bites.
