Islanders Aim to Turn UBS Arena Into a Roaring Fortress Friday Night

As the Islanders gear up for a pivotal homestand, UBS Arena seeks to channel the legendary spirit of Nassau Coliseum to energize their playoff ambitions.

UBS Arena: The Islanders' Secret Weapon in Playoff Push

The Islanders are gearing up for a crucial showdown against the Kings this Friday night, marking their first home game since March 1. With a packed schedule ahead, featuring 12 of their last 17 games at UBS Arena, the Islanders have a golden opportunity to make their home ice a fortress as they chase a playoff spot.

UBS Arena has the potential to be as intimidating as the legendary Nassau Coliseum was in its prime. Defenseman Adam Pelech reminisces about the electric atmosphere back in the Coliseum days, particularly during playoffs.

"When UBS gets rocking, it definitely comes close to that," Pelech shared. The Islanders are hoping to give their fans plenty of reasons to bring the noise as the season winds down.

Friday’s game will be the Islanders' 13th consecutive sellout, with 17,255 fans packing the stands. This streak is the longest since the arena opened in November 2021. The fans' energy is palpable, especially when a playoff berth is on the line.

Defenseman Scott Mayfield emphasized the importance of the home stretch. "Being at home, in front of your fans, with the noise and the structure of the days, home-ice advantage is a real thing," he noted. With a favorable schedule leading into April, the Islanders are eager to capitalize on their time at UBS Arena.

Consistency is key. The Islanders boast a 17-10-2 home record and have been undefeated at UBS Arena in February and March. Winning consistently at home will be crucial in leveraging their home-ice advantage.

UBS Arena can get loud, but the schedule has made those moments sporadic. Unlike the Nassau Coliseum, where crowd noise would seep into the dressing rooms, UBS Arena’s modern design keeps the sound at bay until players hit the ice.

Pelech chuckled, "This building, it’s a little newer, right? The Coli was crazy loud."

Although UBS Arena lacks a storied playoff history, the few postseason games it has hosted reached impressive decibel levels. The Islanders hope this stretch of home games will set the stage for a consistently electrifying atmosphere as the playoffs approach.

Captain Anders Lee summed up the opportunity perfectly: "It will be great to have the building behind us moving forward. We’ve gotten through the stretch of being on the road, and we have a bunch of home games in the bank. It’s a great opportunity."

Indeed, it’s a prime moment for UBS Arena to become a pivotal player in the Islanders' playoff ambitions. The stage is set, and the excitement is building.
