For Islanders fans, Alexei Yashin’s turtleneck is one of those visuals that never really left the early 2000s. It became part of his identity on Long Island, but the reason he wore it had nothing to do with style.
Yashin said the idea started with the jewelry he liked to wear.
"I was wearing a lot of lucky charms, like small gold chains and silver chains," Yashin said. "Every time I was on the ice, they would start coming out, and I was worried about breaking them."
That concern made sense in an era packed with fights, scrums and plenty of hands going for collars. Rather than risk losing or snapping his chains, Yashin went to the Ottawa Senators’ equipment staff looking for help. A tighter undershirt wasn’t available, so the suggestion was simple: try a turtleneck under the gear.
The workaround didn’t get in the way of his production. Over 12 seasons with the Senators and Islanders, Yashin put up 781 points, with 337 goals and 444 assists, in 850 games.
He spent five seasons with the Islanders from 2001-07 and totaled 290 points, including 119 goals and 171 assists, in 346 games. He also wore the captain’s letter from 2005-07.
Even with all the attention it drew, Yashin said there was nothing deeper behind the choice.
"It's very simple," Yashin said. "There was no magic there or some kind of fashion look."
Years later, the turtleneck is still uncommon across the NHL, but it remains one of the most recognizable parts of Yashin’s career look.
