The Braves have plenty still on their plate this season, but the front office also has to keep one eye on what comes next. That means sorting through the upcoming free-agent class and deciding which players actually make sense for a roster with clear needs and some financial realities to keep in mind. One name stands out as a legitimate target for Atlanta: Randy Arozarena.
Left field has become a real issue for the Braves, and it’s hard to ignore how badly they could use an upgrade there. Atlanta also needs rotation depth and a long-term answer at shortstop, but the outfield problem is the one that feels most glaring right now. Arozarena, one of the better bats expected to hit the market, fits the profile of a player who could change that.
There’s also a wrinkle that could help the Braves. Arozarena appears to prefer staying on the East Coast, which could shape his market and give Atlanta a geographic edge. As Ryan Divish put it on Foul Territory:
“I think we all know Randy [Arozarena] would prefer to stay on the east coast. I’m guessing Boston is ready to cut a huge check for him.”
That alone doesn’t make the Braves the favorite, but it does put them in the conversation.
Atlanta’s left-field situation makes the fit even more obvious. Jurickson Profar looks like a nonstarter after two seasons essentially wiped out by PED suspensions, and the rest of the current options are either platoon pieces, fourth outfield types, or prospects who aren’t ready yet.
If the Braves want a real answer, they need someone who can hit and play every day. Arozarena checks that box.
The production is there, too. Even while playing home games in Seattle, one of the most pitcher-friendly parks in the league, Arozarena has posted an .861 OPS with 26 homers in 639 plate appearances thus far.
He handles lefties especially well, but he hits enough against right-handers to stay in the lineup on a regular basis. The defense is not a strength, but Truist Park is more forgiving in the outfield than T-Mobile Park, so that’s not enough to take him off the board.
The catch is cost, and that’s where things get tricky. This free-agent class looks weak, especially for impact bats, which means Arozarena should draw serious attention.
Divish said the Red Sox are likely to be heavily involved, and Boston may not be alone. Because Arozarena has been so strong in the AL East, teams like the Yankees or Orioles could also get into the mix.
So even if the market isn’t as crowded as it seems, it should still get expensive fast. The Braves can offer a lot: a strong team, star power, and real World Series aspirations.
But Alex Anthopoulos has generally preferred to make his moves carefully and get the most out of every dollar. This offseason may demand something different.
Arozarena is one of the rare impact bats available who could actually solve a problem that has lingered for Atlanta for too long.
