Russell Wilson Stunned as Former Teammate Takes Over QB Role

Russell Wilson, once at the pinnacle of NFL success, navigates a challenging new chapter as he grapples with the possibility of backup roles following a stunning benching.

Russell Wilson, once a Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks, finds himself navigating a challenging landscape as his NFL options dwindle. His 2025 season with the New York Giants didn't go as planned.

After an 0-3 start, head coach Brian Daboll made the decision to bench Wilson in favor of rookie Jaxson Dart. The rest of the season saw Dart and Jameis Winston alternating starts, leaving Wilson on the sidelines.

Now a free agent, Wilson's prospects for starting roles are slim. Initially, the Kansas City Chiefs seemed like a potential landing spot after Patrick Mahomes suffered an ACL injury and Gardner Minshew moved to the Arizona Cardinals to fill in for Kyler Murray, who joined the Minnesota Vikings. However, the Chiefs opted to trade for Justin Fields from the New York Jets, a former teammate of Wilson, effectively closing that door.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk suggested that this move might signify the end of Wilson's starting opportunities in the league. The Cardinals, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Las Vegas Raiders could still be in the mix, but starting roles appear unlikely.

Florio noted, “His days as a starting quarterback have ended.” The Cardinals and Steelers have vacancies, but a return to Pittsburgh seems improbable, especially if Aaron Rodgers doesn’t come back.

The Raiders might consider Wilson as a temporary solution if they're hesitant to start Fernando Mendoza immediately. However, Wilson may not be eager to step into a role where he could be quickly replaced.

The Giants have committed to Dart and retained Winston, making a reunion with Wilson improbable. The Miami Dolphins could be a destination, but they have Malik Willis ready to take the helm. Similarly, the Green Bay Packers might offer Wilson a spot, but likely only as a backup.

Wilson's journey in the NFL is at a crossroads, and while his starting days might be behind him, his experience and leadership could still be valuable assets to a team looking for depth and mentorship at the quarterback position.
