Odell Beckham Jr. Just Reopened An Ugly Giants Decision

Odell Beckham Jr.'s critique of the Giants' decision to cut him mid-season raises questions about the team's management and his next NFL move.

Odell Beckham Jr. is not hiding how he feels about the Giants moving on from him mid-season.

After signing with New York in June and working his way onto the roster in August, Beckham looked like a possible piece for Jaxson Dart. That possibility disappeared fast once Dart got hurt, and the Giants cut Beckham after Week 3 before he ever caught a pass.

The Giants released Beckham on Sept. 29 to make room for Braxton Berrios on the active roster. In three games, Beckham played just 19 snaps and was targeted once, a quiet return for a player who had come back to the franchise that drafted him. He had been kept as a fifth wide receiver, a move that had initially stirred up the fanbase.

John Harbaugh explained the decision to ESPN, saying, "Had a great conversation with Odell and it's tough," Harbaugh said of the move, per ESPN." But we just weren't getting enough.

It just wasn't working for us. And like I told him, I wanted to be able to get more.

I wanted him to be able to do more. I wanted to get him on the field more.

"Whatever reason, we weren't able to do it. Put it on us.

We weren't able to get it done. At this point in time, that's kind of where we were and we needed to move on."

Beckham waited until Sunday to address the breakup publicly, and he did it in Instagram comments that made his frustration clear. He wrote that he "didn't see this one," that "they got me," and that "they won." Beckham also said he thought he came in "humbly" on a minimum contract and "earned" his spot, but he "shoulda known better."

"What hurt my heart to the core is comin home and seeing my son and how happy he was with no idea of what happened," Beckham wrote. "Idk why they even gave me the run along."

"I coulda really been playing this year somewhere and making an impact."

At the time of the release, Beckham also texted Josina Anderson that he had just been released, and later said, "one door closes and another opens."

Whether he gets another shot this season remains to be seen, but Beckham is back on the open market.

Giants May Have Found An Unexpected Answer In A Chaotic Win

The Giants 36-24 win over the Cardinals in Week 4 was the kind of game that revealed as much about the roster as the score did. New York had already been forced to absorb the season-ending loss of pass rusher Brian Burns and the release of wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., yet it still steadied itself after falling behind early and found a way to take control.

One of the biggest reasons was rookie linebacker Arvell Reese, who made multiple defensive plays and looked like he belonged in the middle of the chaos. For a team dealing with injuries and turnover, those kinds of contributions matter, and they helped push the Giants to 3-1 while also hinting that they may have stumbled onto an unexpected answer on defense. Giants Defense Faces A Rookie Test That Could Expose A Problem

The Giants are about to get a close look at the kind of rookie who can make a defense feel older than it is. After using the No. 5 pick on edge rusher Arvell Reese, New York now turns its attention to Arizona and the Cardinals No. 3 selection, Jeremiyah Love, a back who has already shown he can matter as both a runner and a receiver.

For a Giants defense dealing with injuries, the matchup comes at a tricky time. New York has done a decent job keeping opponents under control on the ground overall, but recent games have shown a weakness in the way yards are being given up, and Loves versatility creates the sort of test that can expose it if the front seven is a step slow. Jameis Winston Just Made The Giants Quarterback Debate A Lot Harder

Jameis Winstons first extended turn in the Giants offense arrived at a moment when the team could have used some clarity at quarterback, and instead he created more of it. In Week 4 against the Arizona Cardinals, Winston went 18 of 29 for 250 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions, mixing the kind of aggressive play that has always defined him with enough production to keep New York moving.

Even with the turnovers, Winston helped lead the key scoring drives that carried the Giants to a win, which is exactly the sort of performance that complicates an already interesting competition. With newly acquired J.J. McCarthy in the mix, the Giants now have a harder decision to make than they did before Sunday, and Winstons showing made sure that conversation is not going away anytime soon. [Read more 🡒]
