Odell Beckham Jr. made sure the pregame spotlight found him long before the Giants’ offense did.
The New York receiver arrived for Monday night’s matchup with the Los Angeles Rams wearing a crystal-covered glove that clearly nodded to Michael Jackson, another eye-catching entry on a long list of Beckham’s fashion statements. The look had people talking, and it fit right in with the kind of bold style that has followed him throughout his career.
There was also a familiar twist to the night. Beckham spent time with the Rams in 2021, helped them win Super Bowl LVI, and then suffered a knee injury during the championship game. On this stage, though, the attention he drew had more to do with what was on his hand than what he did on the field.
Beckham’s connection to Jackson has shown up before. He has used Jackson-inspired dance moves in celebrations and has paid tribute to the pop icon away from the field as well.
In the Giants’ preseason finale in August, Beckham broke into Michael Jackson-style dance moves after picking up a first down against the New York Jets. He had also recently received ruby-red cleats with a Wizard of Oz-inspired design.
Beckham even has a detailed portrait of Michael Jackson tattooed on his lower right leg.
The glove may have been the flashiest detail of the night, but his usage told a different story. Beckham was on the field for just three offensive snaps out of 58.
By comparison, Malachi Fields played 47 snaps, Malik Nabers got 43, and Darnell Mooney had 42. Braxton Berrios, who usually handles special teams, even logged five snaps.
That limited role stood out even more after starting quarterback Jaxson Dart injured his knee and left the game. Jameis Winston took over and went 11-for-27 passing.
Beckham and Winston have strong chemistry together, but the Giants barely lined them up at the same time. Beckham played only 11 snaps in Week 1, and through two games he still hasn’t been targeted once.
The Giants may have been glad to have Beckham back, but so far they have barely put him to work.
