NY Giants Stun Fans by Signing Top Cornerback Greg Newsome

NY Giants bolster their defense with the strategic signing of versatile cornerback Greg Newsome, aiming to fill key gaps in their roster.

The New York Giants have made a strategic move by signing cornerback Greg Newsome, formerly with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Cleveland Browns. According to reports, the deal is a one-year contract potentially worth up to $10 million, with $3 million guaranteed.

This signing comes on the heels of the Giants losing Cor’Dale Flott to the Tennessee Titans and Jamel Dean to the Pittsburgh Steelers. With these departures, the Giants needed to bolster their secondary, and Newsome offers an intriguing option.

At 25, Newsome was a first-round pick for the Browns in the 2021 NFL Draft, selected 26th overall from Northwestern. He demonstrated his talent with three impressive seasons before experiencing a dip in performance in 2024, leading to a trade to the Jaguars in 2025.

Standing at 6 feet and weighing 192 pounds, Newsome boasts impressive athleticism, clocking a 4.39-second 40-yard dash and a 40-inch vertical leap. His versatility is a significant asset, with experience in both man and zone coverage schemes. He’s adept at playing both outside corner and slot positions, having split his time between these roles with the Browns and focusing more on the outside with the Jaguars.

For the Giants, Newsome is a high-upside addition. If he can return to his earlier form, he could be a key piece in their defensive puzzle.

However, his signing doesn’t rule out the possibility of the Giants pursuing additional cornerbacks or addressing the position through the draft. This move gives them flexibility and depth as they continue to shape their roster.
