The NFL has asked the Department of Homeland Security to pull a video that used Brian Dawkins highlights and imagery without permission, according to league spokesman Brian McCarthy.
The clip, which spread on Sunday evening, was posted by a DHS account in response to claims about a migrant caravan approaching the southern border. It paired a sequence of violent on-field hits with Dawkins’ familiar pregame chant and opened with the former Eagles safety preparing for battle. DHS captioned the post, “Our time has come.”
Dawkins, now a Pro Football Hall of Famer, made it clear he did not approve the use of his likeness. “I have very respectfully not given permission.” In another video response, he stressed again that he had not consented to the use of his name, image and likeness.
Neither the Eagles nor the NFL gave permission for the footage, and a team source confirmed that neither side had consented to this particular use. The league said the game film belongs to the NFL and is rarely allowed to be repurposed by outside groups without approval.
The DHS post remained online through Monday evening, even after the league’s request. DHS said it is playing lockdown defense at the border and will use every available tool to keep Americans safe, while also referencing Dawkins’ old “Weapon X” nickname.
This isn’t the first time an official account has used football footage in a political message. Earlier this year, the White House posted a video that mixed NFL highlights with footage tied to military action in Iran.
The league did not publicly comment then, and that clip stayed up for months. Ryan Clark also previously criticized the White House for similar use of sports footage.
Dawkins spent 13 of his 16 professional seasons in Philadelphia and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2018. His hard-hitting style and intense pregame routines made him a favorite in Philadelphia. As of the latest reports, the DHS video is still circulating, and the NFL has not said whether it will take further legal action after the initial request.
