Jaxson Dart’s knee injury has suddenly pushed the Giants into quarterback-escape mode, and one name is already surfacing as a possible answer: JJ McCarthy.
What started as concern after Monday night’s hit against the Rams has turned into something much more serious. According to Adam Schefter, further testing revealed worse knee damage than initially thought, and Dart and the team now face the possibility of season-ending surgery. Among all the quarterback injuries that hit in Week 2, this one stands out as the most significant.
That reality has opened the door to speculation about how the Giants might respond if Dart is lost for the year. Veteran reporter Gary Myers laid out a straightforward suggestion: New York should explore a trade for Minnesota Vikings third-string quarterback JJ McCarthy. Myers pointed out that general manager Joe Schoen was strongly considering McCarthy with the sixth overall pick in 2024 before the Giants ultimately selected Malik Nabers.
There’s also a natural Harbaugh connection baked into the idea. McCarthy helped Jim Harbaugh win a national championship at Michigan in 2023, and both John and Jim Harbaugh have long been drawn to players with shared history. Myers argued the price would probably not be prohibitive, likely a mid-round pick, which makes the possibility even more intriguing for a Giants team dealing with uncertainty.
The fit makes sense on paper, too. McCarthy could allow the Giants to keep running the same RPO offense that worked for Dart, while that same setup does not suit Jameis Winston nearly as well. Winston struggled badly in relief against the Rams, going 11 of 27 for 111 yards and an interception.
McCarthy’s own NFL start has been rough, but he’s still only 23, just a few months older than Dart. Myers suggested a fresh start under the Harbaughs could help him rediscover his form. And if it clicks, the Giants would have options: keep him as Dart’s long-term backup or later move him in another trade.
Interest in McCarthy is not coming out of nowhere. Earlier this year, reports said three teams had contacted the Vikings about a possible trade for him, and another proposal floated a reunion with a former coach in a deal that would have sent shockwaves around the league. Minnesota currently lists McCarthy behind Kyler Murray and Carson Wentz, and the team has shown little appetite to move him without strong compensation.
For now, though, nothing is public between the Giants and Vikings. Harbaugh and Schoen have not commented on any McCarthy pursuit, and the priority remains Dart’s recovery timeline. Still, the combination of a serious injury, a familiar scheme fit, and what looks like a manageable trade cost has already made the idea one of the league’s more interesting possibilities.
