Jaxson Dart gets a Week 1 chance to make all the offseason Cowboys noise look silly.
On Sunday night, the Giants open against Dallas, and the timing gives Dart a clean shot at knocking down the buzz that’s built around new defensive coordinator Christian Parker. Cowboys fans have spent the offseason calling Parker the answer for a defense that kept them out of the playoffs in 2025, and the revamped unit has become a trendy pick to win the NFC East.
Dart has already shown he can handle the kind of defense Parker is expected to bring.
Parker comes out of the Vic Fangio coaching tree and worked under Fangio with the Philadelphia Eagles as defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator. That means the Cowboys should lean on the same broad ideas Fangio’s system is known for: disguising coverages, limiting big plays, and using light boxes. Parker will put his own stamp on it, but the bones will be familiar.
Last season, Dart saw that style twice against Fangio, Parker and the Eagles, and he handled it well. In those two games, he threw for 492 yards and two touchdowns without an interception.
He also added 75 rushing yards. More than anything, he stayed patient, took what was there, and kept the Giants in position to go 1-1 against Philadelphia.
That same approach is what the Giants need from him here.
Parker will try to muddy the picture before the snap, showing different coverage shells and then rolling into a final look, usually a two-high structure. That kind of post-snap movement can force Dart into rushed decisions, and that has often been a weakness for the young quarterback.
So the assignment is pretty clear: trust the offensive line, work through the reads, and don’t get baited into a mistake. If Dart stays calm and takes the easy completions, the Giants can chip away at the Cowboys’ defense.
He doesn’t need to be flashy in this one. He needs to be efficient.
If he pulls that off, he can quiet the doubters and take a big swing at the hype Dallas has spent all offseason building.
