The Giants are at the point where Jameis Winston could turn a backup job into something much bigger, and the clearest recent roadmap might be Geno Smith’s. It’s an unlikely comparison on the surface, but football has a habit of making strange parallels feel obvious in hindsight.
Smith’s rise started when he stepped in for an injured Russell Wilson with Seattle. The Seahawks liked enough of what they saw to trade Wilson the following offseason and give Smith a chance, and he went on to make two Pro Bowls before leaving for the Raiders in March 2025. That kind of jump is the dream scenario now sitting in front of Winston, who is in his second year as the Giants’ backup.
The timing matters. Jaxson Dart is expected to miss at least the rest of the regular season, which puts the offense in Winston’s hands, both literally and figuratively. If he makes the most of this stretch, the conversation around his future could change fast.
That does not mean the Giants would suddenly trade Dart or hand Winston the 2027 starting job if he strings together a big run over the next three months. And whether Joe Schoen and John Harbaugh would think about drafting a quarterback next spring is a separate issue entirely.
Still, Smith is not the only name worth mentioning. Sam Darnold’s bounce-back in Minnesota came just two years ago, and there are a few reasons Winston’s situation deserves its own comparison set.
Contract status is one. Darnold was playing on a one-year deal as J.J.
McCarthy’s backup, while Winston signed a two-year, $13 million extension earlier this month. Smith’s revival also began on a one-year contract, even if that detail gets lost in the retelling.
Age is the other factor. Winston turns 33 in January.
Smith had just turned 31 when he took over for the Seahawks on Oct. 17, 2021.
Darnold was 27 during his 2024 season, and Case Keenum was 29 when he authored his improbable 2017 run in Minnesota.
If you want another name in the mix, Mac Jones might actually fit the template best. The 49ers did not trade him this offseason, but he is still only 28, which means his next shot at a starting contract should come next spring.
For Winston, though, the immediate question is simpler: what happens if he plays well enough to force the league to pay attention? If he keeps the Giants afloat, and if a quarterback-needy team starts sniffing around, the market could get interesting quickly. The Browns or Falcons would be obvious types of suitors, and the price to land Smith years ago was modest - a sixth-round pick to the Jets and then a seventh-rounder, even after he led the league with 17 interceptions.
That’s all ahead of the Giants if Winston really catches fire. For now, it’s just a conversation, the kind teams and fans have all summer when they’re trying to guess which quarterback might be the next one to pop.
But if Winston has the Giants sitting at 7-3 heading into Thanksgiving, let it be said here: nobody jinxed it.
