Jameis Winston Is Giving The Giants A Chance To Steady Things

Jameis Winston has revived his career with the Giants, proving he's still got what it takes to lead a successful charge.

Not even two games into the season, the Giants are getting the full Jameis Winston package.

That became the reality when Jaxson Dart went down with a season-ending injury, forcing New York to hand the offense to Winston. The Giants had already committed to him before Week 1, signing the veteran to a two-year, $13 million extension, and now they’re living with the full scope of what that move can look like.

It has not been clean. Winston’s early work drew plenty of skepticism, and NFL.com’s Nick Shook had him all the way at No. 32 in his Week 4 quarterback rankings after he stepped in for Dart in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams. At that point, Winston looked shaky and seemed to have lost some of the arm strength that once made him such a dangerous thrower.

But the picture has shifted quickly. Shook now has Winston up to 16th among NFL quarterbacks, ahead of Aaron Rodgers, Kyler Murray, Sam Darnold, Bo Nix, and even Jalen Hurts.

The numbers help explain the climb. In four starts, Winston has thrown for 805 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing more than 60% of his passes. The mistakes and rough patches are still there, but the Giants have gotten more than they likely expected after losing Dart for the year.

The biggest change has come over the last two weeks. Winston was the league’s worst quarterback in Weeks 2 and 3 by EPA per play, but in Weeks 4 and 5 he jumped all the way to ninth in that same metric.

A big part of that turnaround has been his work with Malik Nabers and Isaiah Likely. Winston has leaned on both pass-catchers and put them in position to make plays, with the duo combining for a 63.5% target share in Week 5.

John Harbaugh has made it clear that the Giants are going to ride with Winston the rest of the way, with hopes of getting back into the postseason and even chasing an NFC East title for the first time since Super Bowl XLVI. That’s still the plan even after New York added former first-round pick J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings and is looking to work him into the offense.

For all the chaos that usually comes with Winston, the Giants have at least found a version of him that’s producing. The next test comes Sunday against the New Orleans Saints at MetLife Stadium, where New York will try to keep its NFC East lead and stay perfect at home.

Giants Backfield Shift Puts Cam Skattebo Under Pressure In Week 6

The Giants are moving toward a reshaped backfield in Week 6 after Cam Skattebos fumbling issues forced the staff to rethink the rotation. According to ESPNs Jordan Raanan, the team plans to keep four running backs active for its upcoming game, a sign that the workload distribution is about to get a lot less settled than it has been.

Najee Harris is expected to become a bigger part of the mix, while Skattebo is still slated to remain involved despite the growing concern around ball security. The shift comes after Skattebos overtime fumble against Washington, and it sets up a test of how the Giants want to balance trust, touches and accountability in a backfield that suddenly looks more crowded. Giants Catch A Break With Saints QB Before Crucial Matchup

Tyler Shough has been dealing with a hand issue that could matter a lot to the Giants as they get ready for a pivotal Week 6 matchup with New Orleans. The Saints quarterback has stayed on the field despite the injury, and it clearly showed up in his recent game against the Vikings, where his effectiveness was affected.

New Orleans had kept the situation quiet until just before the Giants game, adding another layer of uncertainty to a meeting that already carried weight for both teams. For New York, the timing at least offers a better read on the challenge ahead, even if the Saints still have a quarterback willing to play through it. [Read more 🡒]

Giants Are Shuffling Two Key Spots Right Before Kickoff

Right before kickoff against the Saints, the Giants had to shuffle two spots that matter a lot in how the offense is going to function. Jermaine Eluemunor is out with a calf injury, which opens the door for Marcus Mbow to start at right tackle, while rookie J.C. Davis is active as a swing tackle in case the protection plan needs another adjustment.

The backfield is changing too, with Najee Harris set to start at running back instead of Cam Skattebo. Sixth-round pick Bobby Jamison-Travis is active for the first time as New York sorts through its game-day options, and the injury report from both sides has left a noticeable list of inactives on a day when roster flexibility suddenly matters more than usual.
