The Giants have turned to J.J. McCarthy, and the price was a lot lighter than anyone would have expected for a former top-10 pick.
New York is landing McCarthy from the Vikings in exchange for a 2027 fifth-round pick, according to Ian Rapoport. The move gives the Giants another option at quarterback after Jaxson Dart was out for the regular season, and it ends McCarthy’s brief, rocky run in Minnesota.
McCarthy entered the league with plenty of hype after going No. 10 overall to the Vikings in 2024, but the production never matched the pedigree. An injury wiped out his rookie season before it could really begin, and his lone stretch as a starter in 2025 went badly enough that Minnesota decided to move on. In 10 games, he completed 57.6% of his passes, threw 12 interceptions and lost three fumbles.
That’s the backdrop for why the trade market never got especially hot. McCarthy was once viewed as a major investment and a polished pocket passer coming out of Michigan, but his stock has taken a sharp hit over the last two seasons.
Minnesota’s decision to bring in Kyler Murray this offseason to compete with McCarthy was the first sign his hold on the job was slipping. Murray won the QB1 role, and Carson Wentz has since impressed in relief work, leaving McCarthy as the odd man out.
For the Giants, the deal gives them another young quarterback to work with while Jameis Winston is pushed back into a QB2 role. It also gives McCarthy a chance to reset in an offense with plenty of weapons around him.
The big question is whether the fifth-round return proves to be a bargain for New York or simply the market price for a quarterback whose value has fallen fast. If McCarthy plays well, the Giants could have landed a useful piece for almost nothing. If not, Minnesota has at least cleared the deck and moved forward with Murray and Wentz in place for the rest of the season.
McCarthy is under contract through 2027 and won’t be an unrestricted free agent until 2028, so the Giants aren’t taking on a short-term rental. They’re betting that a fresh start can help him rediscover the talent that made him such a coveted prospect in the first place.
