Isaiah Likely Is Giving Giants Fans Real Reason To Believe

Isaiah Likely's impressive performances and rising target share are proving his acquisition was a strategic triumph for the Giants.

Isaiah Likely didn’t come to New York to blend in, and four weeks in, he’s doing the opposite.

The Giants have spent too long trying to solve tight end. Since moving on from Evan Engram, the position has been a revolving door of frustration, with Darren Waller and Theo Johnson among the names that have passed through.

John Harbaugh knew that had to change. After building Baltimore offenses around a featured tight end, he made fixing the spot a priority in his first offseason with the Giants and handed Likely a three-year, $40 million deal to become the TE1 New York had been missing.

So far, the bet is paying off.

Likely followed up his Week 1 breakout against Dallas with another strong showing in Sunday’s 36-24 win over Arizona. Even with Jaxson Dart out, and with Jameis Winston not lifting every pass-catcher around him, Likely kept producing. He finished with 66 yards, trailing only Malik Nabers for the team lead, while also pacing the Giants in catches with seven and targets with 12.

That workload told the story as much as the box score did. Likely drew a 41% target share against Arizona, and over Winston’s two starts he’s been targeted on 34% of his opportunities.

The quarterback change hasn’t knocked him off course. If anything, Harbaugh keeps finding ways to funnel the ball his direction.

It could have been an even bigger afternoon, too. Winston missed him on a clear chance for more yardage, sailing one over a wide-open Likely and straight to Budda Baker for an interception. But even that misfire didn’t change the bigger picture: the Giants are treating Likely like a centerpiece.

And that usage isn’t happening by accident. He’s been open consistently, he’s become a safety valve when New York needs a conversion, and Matt Nagy has even lined him up as a jumbo receiver at times. At 6-foot-4 and 241 pounds, he brings the kind of size that lets an offense move him around without losing the threat.

The company he’s keeping is telling. Through four weeks, only seven pass-catchers at wide receiver and tight end have posted a target share above 30%: Jaxon Smith-Njigba, DeVonta Smith, Isaiah Likely, CeeDee Lamb, Brock Bowers, Trey McBride, and Zay Flowers. Likely is sitting right there with Bowers and McBride in usage, and his target share is higher than both.

For a player without a 500-yard season on his résumé, that’s a major sign of trust.

The Coastal Carolina product spent four years behind Mark Andrews before getting his chance in New York, and he’s making the most of it. Nabers’ breakout and Malachi Fields’ big day may have grabbed more attention on Sunday, but Likely kept doing the quiet, steady work that makes an offense function. That’s a big reason the Giants are sitting at 3-1, and it’s why this $40 million gamble looks a whole lot better now than it did when it was signed.

Giants Add A Receiver With Ties Fans Definitely Did Not Expect

The Giants are adding another wide receiver to the mix, signing Dontae Fleming to the practice squad after bringing him in for a visit. Fleming has spent time with the Vikings, and his path to New York comes with some unusual familiar faces, including ties to Giants players Dalen Cambre and J.J. McCarthy.

The move also adds another layer to a transaction cycle that has linked the two teams in recent days, with Minnesota signing recently released Giants player Odell Beckham Jr. to its practice squad. For New York, Fleming is a low-risk depth addition, but the connections around him make this a little more interesting than your typical roster shuffle. [Read more 🡒]

Odell Beckham Jr. Just Landed Another NFL Chance After Giants Exit

The Vikings are taking a low-risk look at Odell Beckham Jr., signing the veteran receiver to their practice squad as they try to patch together depth at a position that has been hit hard by injuries, including the absence of Justin Jefferson. Beckhams latest NFL opportunity comes not long after his release from the Giants, giving him a chance to quickly move from a familiar stop back into another contenders orbit.

What happens next is still up in the air, including whether Beckham will be available for the upcoming game against the New Orleans Saints. For a player trying to re-establish himself after leaving New York, Minnesota offers a path back into the conversation, but first he has to get through the week and show he can be more than a short-term depth answer. Giants Keep Sending The Same Frustrating Message About Jalin Hyatt

Braxton Berrios landing on injured reserve after the foot injury he suffered in Week 4 changes the Giants special teams picture in a hurry, with Charlie Jones expected to step in as the teams primary punt and kick returner. It is another one of those early-season roster shifts that usually creates an opening somewhere else, especially for a receiver trying to climb into the mix.

Jalin Hyatt, though, still does not appear close to being that guy. Even with Berrios out and Odell Beckham Jr. gone, the Giants remain reluctant to promote Hyatt to the active roster, a sign that his limited production since entering the league is still weighing on his standing. For a team that could use more juice on offense, the message has been frustratingly consistent. [Read more 🡒]
