The New York Giants aren’t wasting any time in their search for a new offensive coordinator. With a key vacancy to fill on John Harbaugh’s staff, the team is casting a wide net-and doing it quickly.
The latest name added to the mix? Shane Day, the Los Angeles Chargers’ quarterbacks coach, who’s scheduled to interview with the Giants on Saturday.
Day becomes the third known candidate lined up for interviews this week, joining a growing list of offensive minds the Giants are vetting. On Thursday, the team also requested interviews with Indianapolis Colts passing game coordinator Alex Tanney and offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. That’s on top of their earlier request to speak with Denver Broncos quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator Davis Webb, who could be in the running for a promotion in Denver himself.
At 51, Day brings a deep and varied coaching résumé to the table. He’s been around the league, with stops in San Francisco (twice), Chicago, Washington, Miami, Houston, and now Los Angeles-twice.
While he hasn’t yet held the title of offensive coordinator, he’s worked in just about every other offensive role you can think of: quarterbacks coach, passing game coordinator, offensive quality control. That kind of experience across multiple systems and coaching trees gives him a well-rounded perspective, something that could be valuable for a Giants offense looking to reset.
Most recently, Day spent the past two seasons working under Jim Harbaugh with the Chargers, helping guide a quarterback room that’s seen its share of ups and downs. It’s worth noting that Day also interviewed for the Chargers’ offensive coordinator position before the team ultimately hired former Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel. That tells you he’s on the radar for coordinator roles-and could be ready to take the next step.
For the Giants, this hiring process is about more than just play design or scheme. It’s about finding the right fit to help develop their quarterback, stabilize the offense, and bring a fresh identity to a unit that’s struggled to find consistency. Whether that’s a young riser like Webb or Tanney, a seasoned play-caller like Cooter, or a veteran assistant like Day who’s ready for the next challenge-it’s clear the Giants are leaving no stone unturned.
Saturday’s interview with Day will be another piece of that puzzle.
