Giants Suddenly Have An Isaiah Likely Question With J.J. McCarthy

In a surprising twist, J.J. McCarthy's debut shifted the Giants' offensive focus away from tight end Isaiah Likely, leaving fans eager to see if he can reclaim the spotlight in coming matchups.

Isaiah Likely entered Week 7 looking like the Giants’ most reliable pass catcher, but J.J. McCarthy’s first start changed that in a hurry.

For most of the season, Jameis Winston had kept feeding Likely early and often. Through six games, no tight end had more receiving yards than the Giants target, and he had been piling up volume week after week. Then McCarthy took over, and the entire passing picture shifted in New York’s 27-21 overtime win over the Houston Texans.

McCarthy did plenty to like in his debut start. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 252 scoreless yards and helped guide the Giants to a road upset. The one obvious miss in an otherwise strong performance was how little Likely factored into the game plan.

Likely finished with just two catches on four targets for 12 yards against Houston. That was a sharp drop from what he had been producing before the quarterback change.

In each of the Giants’ first six games, he had seen at least five targets. In five of those six, he had also posted at least five receptions and 33 yards.

Malik Nabers was always going to be a major part of the offense, and his role wasn’t the surprise here. The bigger question is why Likely was pushed so far into the background in McCarthy’s first outing.

The source article points to the Texans’ defense as a possible factor, noting Houston has given up a lot of production to outside receivers in 2026 and that Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter have been more vulnerable than usual. Even so, the result was the same: Likely was effectively reduced to a secondary option behind Nabers and the running backs.

That makes the Giants’ bye week a useful checkpoint. Once they come out of it, the split in Likely’s usage between Winston and McCarthy will be worth watching closely.

The next chance for a rebound comes in Week 9 against the Philadelphia Eagles, and the matchup looks far better on paper. Philadelphia sits near the bottom of the league in slot receptions and yards allowed, which matters because Likely has lined up inside on 81.4 percent of his snaps, second among tight ends who have run at least 50 routes. Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is third at 65.9 percent.

With that alignment and the Eagles’ issues in the middle of the field, Likely has a clear path to get back on track. Even after one quiet game with McCarthy, he remains a central piece of the Giants’ offense, whether Winston or McCarthy is throwing the passes.

Abdul Carter Is Becoming The Giants Voice At The Perfect Time

With injuries piling up across the Giants defense, a younger voice has started to carry more weight in the room. Abdul Carter has emerged as one of the more visible leaders on a group that has had to absorb major losses, including season-ending setbacks for Brian Burns and Tremaine Edmunds, and his presence has mattered as much for the tone he sets as for the snaps he plays.

The timing could hardly be better for a team trying to hold its defense together through attrition. Micah McFadden has also been pushed into a bigger role at middle linebacker after Edmunds went down, and the Giants have seen signs that the next wave of defenders can steady things in the middle of all the upheaval. For a roster trying to stay organized while the injuries keep coming, having Carter grow into a voice the rest of the defense can follow is no small thing. [Read more 🡒]

Giants May Have Avoided A Brutal Cam Skattebo Situation

The Giants got a jolt in their overtime win over the Texans when Cam Skattebo ripped off a 42-yard run that helped swing the game, but there was a brief scare attached to it. Skattebo appeared to come up with a hamstring issue on the play, which immediately raised questions about how much damage he might have done while trying to finish off a big road victory.

For now, the early read is encouraging for New York. NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reported the injury is not serious, and the timing works in the Giants' favor with a bye week before their next game, giving Skattebo extra recovery time before the Week 9 matchup with the Eagles. The Giants have plenty to sort out after an emotional win, but avoiding a longer-term setback for one of their most dynamic backs would be a major relief. [Read more 🡒]

Giants Win Could Spark Bigger Fight Over Cam Skattebo Call

The Giants left Houston with a win, but one snap late in the game is likely to keep them talking long after the final whistle. Running back Cam Skattebo drew a penalty on a collision with a Texans defender, and the call quickly became part of the larger frustration around how the league is enforcing contact rules.

Head coach John Harbaugh voiced irritation with the officiating and pointed to the lack of clarity around helmet contact, a theme that has become familiar enough for teams to keep asking for answers. The result on the scoreboard held up for New York, but the dispute over what exactly is being coached and what gets flagged could push the issue into another round of discussions with league officials.
