Giants Suddenly Have A Backfield Concern Before Eagles Game

The Giants face a critical decision at running back as Cam Skattebo's availability remains uncertain for Sunday's showdown with the Eagles.

Cam Skattebo’s hamstring kept him off the practice field again Friday, but the Giants still haven’t shut the door on their leading rusher for Sunday’s matchup with the Eagles. He’s been absent for four straight practices now and is officially listed as doubtful, yet New York is leaving a sliver of hope.

“Let’s see what happens” head coach John Harbaugh said of Skattebo’s status.

There was better news on Malik Nabers. The wide receiver, who missed practice Thursday, told reporters he practiced Friday, and Harbaugh said Nabers’ health is “not an issue” for Sunday.

If Skattebo can’t go, Devin Singletary would step in as the Giants’ lead back against Philadelphia. Gregory Desrosiers is the other running back on the 53-man roster, while Phil Mafah and Eric Gray are on the practice squad.

Charlie Jones is the other Giants player worth watching on the injury report. The wide receiver/returner popped up this week with a hand injury and is listed as questionable.

“He’s managing it,” Harbaugh said. “He was out today catching and everything like that.

Just want to make sure he could catch. I haven’t talked to him yet.

We’ll see how he felt.”

New York also has an open roster spot after waiving quarterback Jake Haener from the 53-man roster Thursday, so adding another back or a return option before Sunday would make sense.

On the Eagles side, Saquon Barkley was limited in Friday’s practice with a hamstring/back issue but still carries an injury designation, which means he’ll play Sunday.

Philadelphia’s final injury report also lists LB Jihaad Campbell (hamstring/quad), DB Michael Carter (abdomen), WR Britain Covey (knee), CB Jonathan Jones (hamstring), WR DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and WR Dontayvion Wicks (ankle) as out.

Quarterback Tanner McKee is questionable with a rib injury.

Giants Suddenly Face A Trade Deadline Debate Fans Didn't Expect

The idea sounds a little out of place for a franchise that has spent plenty of recent seasons trying to dig itself out of its own mess, but the Knicks bold 2024 move for Mikal Bridges is the kind of example that can change how a city thinks about risk. New York paid a steep price in draft capital, waited for the payoff, and eventually got a championship out of it, which is exactly why the conversation around the Giants now feels different than the usual deadline chatter. If the front office believes this roster is close enough to matter, the temptation is to treat the trade deadline less like a cleanup date and more like a chance to accelerate the timeline.

For the Giants, that means the usual questions about depth, holes and future flexibility suddenly come with a more aggressive edge. The roster still has areas that could use help, and the deadline always forces teams to decide whether they are patching around the edges or trying to make a real statement about where they think the season is headed. No one is pretending the answer is simple, but the Knicks example has at least opened the door to a bigger debate than Giants fans expected this time of year. [Read more 🡒]

Giants Suddenly Have A Trade Deadline Opening They Cant Ignore

With the Nov. 10 trade deadline approaching, the Giants are being linked to a possible backfield upgrade as they sort through a run game that has become harder to manage by the week. The fit being discussed is Derrick Henry, whose history with coach John Harbaugh has kept the idea alive as New York looks for a proven answer rather than a short-term patch.

The timing is obvious enough, given the injuries piling up in the backfield and the heavier burden on Devin Singletary. Still, there has been no official move or confirmation, which leaves the Giants in that familiar deadline spot: aware of the need, aware of the options, and now waiting to see whether the front office decides this is the moment to act. Giants Linked To Risky Trade Option With Big Upside

TreVeyon Henderson has been one of the more intriguing names to watch in New England, and not just because of what he can do with the ball in his hands. The Patriots running back has seen his role shrink behind Rhamondre Stevenson, and his recent absence because of illness has only added another layer to a situation that already felt unsettled.

For the Giants, that makes him the kind of risky trade target worth monitoring if the Patriots ever decide to listen. Henderson still carries the appeal of a young back with upside, but the medical uncertainty around him and the lack of any clear indication that New England wants to move him make this more of a speculative idea than a real market. Even so, it is the sort of name that can linger on a teams radar when depth, talent and availability all start to intersect. [Read more 🡒]
