The Giants’ quarterback situation took a hard turn when Jaxson Dart went down in Week 2 against the Los Angeles Rams, and now the team is staring at a season with Jameis Winston as the starter. Dart’s knee injury is being described as season-ending, and while it was not an ACL tear, the damage was extensive enough to end his year.
Winston, who signed a two-year extension this offseason, is now the man under center. But the Giants may not stop there if they decide they need more help behind him.
Trade chatter is already circling, and Jonathan Jones of The Athletic reported that one league source named two possible targets as mid-tier insurance options: Titans quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.
“One league source pointed to Titans QB Mitchell Trubisky and Steelers QB Mason Rudolph as potential mid-tier options down the road,” Jones shared.
For now, the Giants are counting on Winston to hold the job. If he plays well enough, they may never feel the need to bring in a veteran from outside the building. But if his play slips, Trubisky and Rudolph are the kinds of names that could enter the conversation.
Trubisky, a former Pro Bowler, has thrown for 13,028 yards with 78 touchdowns and 48 interceptions in his career, along with a 64.4% completion percentage. He has mostly been in mop-up duty in recent seasons with the Buffalo Bills. Now with the Titans, he could be available if Tennessee wants to recover some draft value with Cam Ward locked in as the starter.
Rudolph brings a different profile, but he has also been mentioned as a possible fit. He owns a 64.3% completion percentage, with 4,925 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and 22 interceptions, most of that work coming with the Steelers. With Aaron Rodgers starting and Drew Allar and Will Howard also on the depth chart, moving Rudolph would make sense for Pittsburgh.
If the Giants decide they need a quarterback who can handle a few games or simply provide a stronger backup option after Dart’s injury pushed Winston up the depth chart, Rudolph or Trubisky would be logical names to watch.
