Cam Skattebo Walks Again: Giants Rookie Takes First Step Toward NFL Return
There’s a moment in every comeback story where things start to feel real again. For Giants rookie running back Cam Skattebo, that moment came Wednesday - walking into the team facility on his own two feet, no boot, no scooter, just a quiet, powerful reminder that progress is being made.
“Walking into the facility on my own two feet. God is good,” Skattebo said in a video shared on social media.
“Just want to say thank you to everybody that supported. We getting back to it, let’s go!”
It’s a big step - literally and figuratively - for a player whose NFL journey was put on pause by a brutal lower-leg injury earlier this season. And make no mistake, this wasn’t your run-of-the-mill high ankle sprain.
In a November interview, Skattebo laid out the full extent of the damage. It started with a broken fibula, but that was just the beginning.
The force of the injury tore the ligament that connects the lower leg to the ankle, and with the bone no longer anchoring the joint, his ankle dislocated and twisted nearly 90 degrees. To make matters worse, a critical tendon that helps stabilize the tibia and fibula also snapped.
To repair the damage, doctors inserted what Skattebo described as a “tightrope” - a surgical technique that involves drilling through the bones and threading a high-strength cord to pull everything back into alignment. It’s designed to hold up under stress, even in the violent world of professional football.
Before the injury, Skattebo had been carving out a role in the Giants’ offense. The rookie rushed for 410 yards on 101 carries - a solid 4.1 yards per attempt - and found the end zone five times on the ground.
He also showed value as a pass-catcher, hauling in 24 receptions for 207 yards and two touchdowns. His physical, no-nonsense running style gave the Giants a spark, especially in short-yardage situations and in the red zone.
Now, the focus shifts to recovery and what comes next. It’s still early in the process, and there’s no official timeline for his return to the field. But walking unassisted is a major milestone - and for a player who’s already proven he can contribute at the NFL level, it’s a promising sign.
Skattebo’s road back won’t be easy, but if this first step is any indication, he’s more than ready for the fight.
