Giants OC Search Heats Up as Top Candidate Linked to Browns Job

As the Giants weigh their top pick for offensive coordinator, Todd Monkens head coaching prospects in Cleveland could reshape both teams sidelines.

The New York Giants are starting to build out their coaching staff under new head coach John Harbaugh, and while the defense and special teams units now have their leaders in place, the offensive coordinator chair is still empty-for now.

All eyes are on Todd Monken, the former Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator, who’s widely seen as the frontrunner for the job in New York. But there’s a wrinkle: Monken is also in the running for the Cleveland Browns’ head coaching position. That means the Giants are in a bit of a holding pattern while Cleveland finalizes its decision.

Here’s where things get interesting. According to reports, the Browns are giving serious consideration to Rams passing game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, a rising name in coaching circles.

The team reportedly flew to Los Angeles for a second in-person interview with the 35-year-old coach-an indication that Scheelhaase may now be the leading candidate for the Browns’ top job. If Cleveland makes that hire soon, it could clear the path for Monken to head to New York.

That potential domino effect could accelerate things for the Giants. Monken has a strong track record, and his familiarity with Harbaugh from their time in Baltimore makes him a logical fit to lead the offense in New York. But until the Browns make their move, the Giants will have to wait.

In the meantime, the Giants aren’t sitting idle. They’ve already interviewed Robert Prince for the offensive coordinator role. Prince, who has an extensive background as a wide receivers coach, could still land on Harbaugh’s staff in that capacity if the OC job goes to someone else.

So while the Giants’ offensive coordinator spot is still up in the air, the picture is starting to come into focus. Once Cleveland makes its call, expect things to move quickly in East Rutherford.
