The Ohio State Buckeyes are brimming with NFL-ready talent, and as the draft approaches, several of their stars are poised to make waves in the first round. Edge rusher Arvell Reese, linebacker Sonny Styles, safety Caleb Downs, wide receiver Carnell Tate, and defensive tackle Kayden McDonald are all expected to hear their names called early, although McDonald might just slide into the second day.
But here's the million-dollar question: How should the New York Giants approach this draft bonanza?
Holding the No. 5 overall pick, the Giants are in a prime position to make a splash. While Reese might be off the board by then, Styles and Downs have been frequently linked to New York. The real debate is whether either player truly fits the Giants' needs.
New York bolstered their linebacker corps by signing Tremaine Edmunds in free agency, which might lessen the urgency to draft another linebacker. As for safety, selecting one with a top-five pick is always a gamble, especially if there are concerns like a knee issue in play.
The consensus seems to lean towards the Giants picking one of these defensive standouts, but there’s another angle to consider. The Giants are in desperate need of an X-receiver to pair with Malik Nabers.
Despite signing Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III, neither fully fits that role. This makes Carnell Tate an intriguing option at No.
Trading down is also a strategic move worth considering. The Giants have pressing needs at defensive tackle, cornerback, guard, and wide receiver. Outside of Tate, there might not be a top-five-worthy player available to fill these gaps.
And what about Ohio State's other prospects? Kayden McDonald could be a gem at No. 37 if he’s still on the board. However, cornerback Davison Igbinosun might be a risk, given his penalty-laden college career.
In the end, the Giants have a lot to ponder, but one thing’s for sure: this draft could be pivotal for their future.
