Giants May Have Just Locked In No. 5 Pick

Despite pressing roster needs, the Giants may surprise with their No. 5 draft pick, including a top running back prospect.

The New York Giants are stirring up some buzz with their latest NFL Draft considerations. While they have clear needs at positions like defensive tackle, cornerback, guard, and wide receiver, there's been chatter about some unexpected names entering the mix.

Ohio State receiver Carnell Tate is the standout option among the top five, but the Giants have also been linked to linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs, both of whom played alongside Tate in Columbus. Yet, the real curveball is Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love.

Love is hailed as the top halfback in this year's draft, with his performance at Notre Dame earning him high praise. Despite this, the Giants aren't exactly in the market for a running back, given they already have Cam Skattebo and Tyrone Tracy, who are poised to make a strong impact in 2026.

However, reports from ESPN's Matt Miller suggest that the Giants are seriously considering Love if he's available at the No. 5 spot. This raises eyebrows for several reasons.

Firstly, in today's NFL, running back isn't considered a high-priority position. While talents like Saquon Barkley and Derrick Henry have made their mark, the focus generally leans towards other areas of need.

Secondly, with Skattebo and Tracy ready to form a formidable duo, using a top draft pick on another running back seems unnecessary-unless there are lingering concerns about Skattebo's recovery from his ankle injury.

Lastly, there's a lesson from the past. The Giants previously selected Saquon Barkley at No. 2 in 2018, passing on other potential game-changers like Josh Allen. While Barkley was a phenomenal talent, the decision still sparks debate.

The Giants appear to have their franchise quarterback in place, but with several other gaps to fill, their draft strategy will be crucial. Fans will be watching closely to see how this unfolds.
