The Giants are locking in Greg Newsome II for the long haul.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the veteran cornerback has agreed to a three-year, $46 million contract extension with $32 million guaranteed. Newsome originally signed a one-year, $7 million deal with New York during the offseason, and the new agreement would keep him under contract through 2029. The guaranteed money is expected to be spread across the first two seasons.
For Newsome, the move comes after a winding stretch in his career. The 2021 first-round pick out of Cleveland put together three strong seasons to open his NFL run, but his play slipped in 2024 and carried into 2025, which led the Browns to trade him to the Jacksonville Jaguars midseason.
When he arrived with the Giants, the 26-year-old made it clear he was looking for a fresh start in a defense that fit what he does best.
“I feel like this is an opportunity for me to be here long-term,” Newsome said shortly after signing with the Giants. “There [were] other places that could have had a little bit longer-term deal, but I wanted to be here, and I wanted to showcase myself in front of the New York fan base and my coaches and players. I’m excited to start fresh here now and hopefully we get something done where I can retire a Giant, because that’s what I want to do.]
He also spelled out the part of his game he believes travels best.
“With my game, my strong suit I think is playing press man coverage,” Newsome said. “That was something that we did in Cleveland all the time was playing man-to-man, getting in people’s face and challenging guys.
So that’s where I feel like my strong suit is. Improvement, I feel like all of my game can improve.
If you’re not trying to improve on everything, then you’re not trying to be a great player. I think just improving on all - press, everything, I feel like there’s always something that I can get better at.”
That bet has paid off so far. Newsome has earned a starting role and turned in a strong season, posting a career-best 62.0 passer rating against and a career-best 57.7 reception percentage allowed.
Pro Football and Sports Network has him ranked 18th among 106 qualifying cornerbacks with an Impact Score of 82.6, a mark that would stand as a career high if it holds through the rest of the season.

Giants Enter Eagles Week With A Big Cam Skattebo Concern
The Giants opened the week with a familiar injury-watch storyline around Cam Skattebo, who is still working back from the hamstring issue he picked up in Week 7 against the Texans. He was held out of practice Monday, leaving the backfield picture a little murkier as New York turns its attention to the next game.
John Harbaugh said Skattebos status will be handled day to day, with the real clarity likely to come later in the week. If the rookie cannot go, the Giants would have to lean more heavily on other options such as Devin Singletary and Gregory Desrosiers, which could change how they approach the offense in a matchup where every healthy piece matters. Derrick Henry Just Became A Ravens Trade Question Fans Can't Ignore
The Giants search for help could take them in a different direction as the 2026 NFL trade deadline approaches, with Derrick Henry now surfacing as a name to watch. New York had previously been tied to Jonathan Taylor, but the conversation has shifted as the market and the situation around Baltimore continue to evolve, giving the Giants another veteran back to consider if they decide to make a move.
Henrys availability is now part of the discussion because the Ravens are dealing with injuries to Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley, a development that could complicate how Baltimore handles its roster. For the Giants, it adds another layer to a running back picture that already had one prominent trade target attached to it, and it leaves open the question of whether they stay on that path or pivot as the deadline gets closer. Greg Newsomes Rise After Jacksonville Just Took Another Painful Turn
Greg Newsomes first season with the Giants has moved quickly from a one-year prove-it deal to a much longer commitment. After arriving this offseason following stops with the Browns and Jaguars, the cornerback has settled in as a steady presence for New Yorks defense, and the timing of the latest move, reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz after the teams Week 8 bye, shows how much the organization values what he has brought through the first part of the year.
For a Giants secondary that has needed reliable play on the back end, Newsomes work has clearly stood out enough to earn a major extension before the season even reaches its stretch run. The deal gives New York a key piece to build around, and it also adds another layer to a season in which the team has been looking for stability wherever it can find it. [Read more 🡒]
