The Giants are moving on from Odell Beckham Jr., according to reports from Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.
Beckham, 33, had signed with New York for a second stint this summer, joining fellow veteran receivers Braxton Berrios and JuJu Smith-Schuster. His return never really turned into much more than a quiet cameo. He was able to get open regularly in the preseason, but when the games counted, the targets didn’t follow.
Once the regular season began, Beckham was still drawing attention from the home crowd and getting ovations, but he was hardly a factor on the field. Through the first three games, his role had been stripped down to little more than a decoy and an occasional blocker downfield.
That limited usage left people around the team asking what he was even doing on the roster, especially since he doesn’t contribute on special teams.
After the release, the Giants are down to three wide receivers on their 53-man roster: Malik Nabers, Darnell Mooney, and rookie Malachi Fields.
The move also comes with a roster wrinkle tied to Berrios, New York’s primary returner. He has used up his practice-squad elevations, which forces the Giants to decide whether to add him to the active roster or keep him on the practice squad for the rest of the season.
Jordan Schulz reported that Beckham will not be heading to the Giants’ practice squad. Instead, he’ll be searching for another chance elsewhere after showing he can still earn a place on an NFL roster.
