The Giants added a little extra intrigue to their Week 1 setup on Saturday, and Malik Nabers is right at the center of it.
New York promoted wide receiver and special teams contributor Dalen Cambre from the practice squad to the 53-man roster, a move that immediately got people wondering what it means for Nabers ahead of Sunday night’s matchup with the Dallas Cowboys. Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com reported the move and noted that the Giants are still sorting through the final shape of the game-day roster.
“Giants are signing WR/ST Dalen Cambre to the 53-man roster, per sources. Sense I get is that they’re still going through combos of what game day roster will look like with actives/inactives and Malik Nabers’ status,” Stapleton wrote.
Cambre’s path back onto the roster has been a steady one. He put together a solid summer, catching seven passes for 79 yards in three preseason games.
The Giants moved on from him during final cuts, then brought him back to the practice squad before giving him another crack at the active roster now. The promotion also comes with a pay bump and leaves open the possibility that he’ll be available for Sunday night.
The timing is what’s fueling the speculation around Nabers. SNY’s Connor Hughes pointed to the move as a possible sign that things are not fully settled for the star receiver.
“Activating another WR I don’t think bodes well for Malik Nabers. But we’ll see,” Hughes wrote on X.
At the same time, Nabers is not carrying a designation on the Giants’ official injury report, and he has practiced fully for two straight days. That gives the situation a very different look than a player clearly trending toward sitting out.
Still, Nabers has made it plain he is not going to gamble with his future for one game. When reporters asked about his status Thursday, he pointed to comments from head coach John Harbaugh and said, “What Harbs said.”
Nabers then expanded on that thought: “I’ve been wanting to play for so long now. At the end of the day, I can’t put my career at risk.
I got to take that into account. There’s a lot of football that I still have left to play,” Nabers said.
So the Giants may simply be making sure they have another receiver ready while they sort out who is active and who is not. They could also be trying to keep Dallas in the dark. Either way, the Cambre move adds another layer to the Nabers watch, and the real answer won’t come until the Giants release their final lineup Sunday night.
