The Giants’ decision to move on from Darius Slayton has already started to look like one of those moves that might have made more sense if they had waited a little longer.
New York released the veteran wide receiver ahead of Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season, a surprising call for a player who was the team’s longest-tenured member. The timing stood out even more because the Giants didn’t save much money by cutting him, and they still could have used him on a roster that lacks proven depth behind Malik Nabers, who was coming off a serious knee injury and was officially declared active shortly before kickoff.
The other issue is what the Giants may have left on the table. By letting Slayton go when they did, they may have closed the door on any chance of getting even a modest trade return. That matters for a rebuilding team already short on draft capital, with fourth- and seventh-round picks missing in 2027.
There’s also the simple reality that receiver value can change fast. Several teams lost important pass-catchers in the first wave of the season, and that kind of injury fallout can create a market where none seemed to exist before.
New England Patriots standout A.J. Brown was placed on injured reserve with a high-ankle sprain, sidelining him for at least four games and reportedly likely more.
San Francisco 49ers second-round rookie De'Zhaun Stribling is out "for at least a month" after suffering a deltoid sprain in his ankle, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Baltimore Ravens playmaker Zay Flowers appeared to aggravate the hamstring injury he dealt with during training camp.
The Los Angeles Chargers also saw Ladd McConkey exit and never return because of a chest issue.
Of course, injuries can’t be forecast with any real certainty. But that only sharpens the question around the Giants’ urgency.
They were already on the hook for $9 million this year, and Slayton was under contract through 2027. Even if the best they could have done was a late-round pick, that kind of return would have meant something for a franchise trying to stockpile help.
According to The Exhibit’s Josina Anderson, three possible suitors "reached out quickly for preliminary conversations" after the Giants cut Slayton loose. That makes the whole situation even stranger: the interest may have been there, but New York walked away before it could turn into anything concrete.
Head coach John Harbaugh’s explanation didn’t do much to clear things up. The release felt abrupt for a respected player with Slayton’s standing in the organization, and it raises the possibility that the Giants were trying to do right by the Auburn product by letting him pick his next landing spot.
