Giants fans looking at Malachi Fields and Caleb Douglas after one week need to pump the brakes.
Yes, Fields’ debut for New York was pretty quiet. In the Giants’ Sunday Night win over the Dallas Cowboys, he finished with just two catches.
Douglas, meanwhile, came out swinging for Miami, grabbing five passes for 94 yards in the Dolphins’ loss to the Las Vegas Raiders. That kind of box score is exactly the sort of thing that can send fans into a frenzy, especially when it comes after New York traded up to land Fields.
But the raw numbers don’t tell the whole story here. Douglas is operating in a very different environment, and that matters.
Miami appears to be leaning into the future, and its thin wide receiver setup has opened the door for Douglas to see a much bigger target share. He was second on the team in targets behind Malik Washington, and that volume is going to pad his stats in a way Fields simply won’t get in New York.

The NFL is a different level, and it may take time before he settles in. Once defenses start keying on Likely after his Sunday Night breakout, Fields should have more chances to get involved.
So no, Giants fans do not need to spiral over one quiet opener. If Fields grows into a meaningful role on a team that is in the playoff picture, that can still justify the pick even if Douglas piles up prettier stats for a Miami team that looks headed nowhere fast.
