The Giants suddenly have a Brian Burns-sized hole to fill after the star outside linebacker tore his right ACL in a 12-7 win over the Tennessee Titans, and Jason Pierre-Paul has already floated himself as a possible answer.
Pierre-Paul went to social media and, in a post on X/Twitter, appeared to signal his availability while mentioning the Giants. The post read, "What's up." And while New York can certainly use help, this one feels like a bridge too far.
Pierre-Paul’s days as a force in blue and white ended about a decade ago, and time has not been kind. He turns 38 on January 1. That alone tells you where this stands.
The Giants also just lived through a similar nostalgia experiment with Odell Beckham Jr., and the result wasn’t much of a result at all. Beckham came in this offseason as depth and insurance while Malik Nabers recovered from a torn ACL and meniscus, then barely made a dent. He didn’t catch a pass, saw only one target across three games, and his reps remain managed.
Head coach John Harbaugh said Beckham "earned his spot" on the roster, but the production never matched the sentiment. That’s the cautionary tale here. If Beckham couldn’t carve out a real role, why would Pierre-Paul - older, and with far less recent football under his belt - be any different?
The recent numbers don’t help Pierre-Paul’s case. His last sack came nearly four years ago, and he has played just 60 defensive snaps since the 2022 campaign. At that point, bringing him back in 2026 would be more about the headline than the help.
None of that erases what Pierre-Paul once was for the Giants. The 2010 first-round pick was a difference-maker in his prime and a key piece of their Super Bowl XLVI run. He’s still a respected name around the franchise, and that’s exactly why the idea has any traction at all.
He also has the résumé to justify the respect. Pierre-Paul ranks 10th all time among Giants in sacks with 58.5, is one of 11 players in team history with at least 50, and is the only defensive lineman in the franchise’s top 20 in pass deflections, tying Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie for fifth with 47.
There is at least one reason this rumor has legs. Pierre-Paul has a prior connection with Harbaugh, having overlapped with him for one season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022 before both ended up back with the Giants. Harbaugh also took a late-career shot on Beckham in 2023, and he has already brought several Ravens retreads to New York.
So yes, the connection exists. The history is there.
But the Giants have already seen how a reunion built on memory can go. One was enough.
