The Giants are headed to Houston with more questions than answers, and not much confidence from the Big Blue View staff that Sunday goes their way.
The most immediate change is under center. J.J.
McCarthy will make his first Giants start after coming in last week against the Saints, a move that arrives a little earlier than some expected with New York’s bye sitting right around the corner. It is still a strange spot for a former Top-10 pick trying to reboot his career after his struggles in Minnesota, but the Giants are handing him the job now.
That decision comes with plenty of baggage. New York is banged up across the roster, especially along the offensive line.
Andrew Thomas is working through a groin injury, Jermaine Eluemunor has a calf issue, and Marcus Mbow picked up a knee injury at the end of the Saints game. The injury list keeps going on the other side of the ball, where Greg Newsome II, Jevon Holland, and Colton Hood are in the concussion protocol, and Theo Johnson is still dealing with a neck injury.
Paulson Adebo is expected back, but the secondary remains thin.
That’s a rough setup against a Texans team that has started to round into form. Houston opened 0-4 but has won its last two, including a big win in London over the Jaguars.
C.J. Stroud has been playing some of the best football of his career after a slow start, and the Texans’ defense is dangerous again when it matters most.
DeMeco Ryans has taken back control of that unit, and the edge duo of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter is the kind of problem that can ruin an afternoon fast.
The Texans have been vulnerable, too. Their defense has not been as sharp as it was last season, and corners Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter have not been at their previous level.
They have given up more than 30 points three times, and Trevor Lawrence just put up 306 yards and four touchdowns against them. That leaves a path for the Giants if their passing game can get going.
But that’s where the concern comes back. Houston’s edge rush is the real danger, and New York’s tackles are not at full strength.
The Giants’ run blocking has also been shaky, which makes it hard to lean on the ground game no matter who gets the carries. On the other side, the Texans have plenty of weapons for Stroud to work with, including Nico Collins, Jaylin Noel, Xavier Hutchinson, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Tank Dell.
Who the Giants use to cover Collins is a major question, especially with their defensive backs taking hits.
The staff opinions line up in the same direction: this looks like a Texans pick for all four voices. One view is that McCarthy could provide a spark and help the Giants play the style they were built for, but that may not be enough with the injuries piling up.
Another sees Houston’s pass rush making life miserable if Thomas and Eluemunor can’t go or are limited. One writer also noted that the Giants have missed chances the last two weeks, a tie and a loss that could linger, and called this a game where the Texans’ defense may finally break through.
The bottom line from the panel is simple enough: the Giants may have a shot if the passing game clicks, but most of the signs point the other way. Pick: Texans.

Giants Face A Defining Roster Decision As QB Change Begins
With J.J. McCarthy set to make his first start of the week against the Texans, the Giants are entering a stretch where every roster decision feels a little louder than usual. The quarterback switch gives the team a fresh look heading into Week 7, but it also keeps the focus on a group still trying to sort out its depth and identity after moving on from running back Najee Harris.
Paulson Adebos return from injured reserve adds another layer to that picture, especially with the cornerback practicing in a limited capacity after a knee injury. Even as the Giants work through the immediate demands of the new quarterback setup, there is still plenty of attention on how the roster may evolve around him, with the front office facing questions about whether more changes could be coming. Giants Trade Deadline Picture Suddenly Includes One Surprising Name
The Giants head into the trade deadline in a strange spot, sitting atop the division while still dealing with the kind of injury issues that can change a rosters direction in a hurry. That has opened the door to some unexpected names surfacing in the conversation, including Kayvon Thibodeaux and Cam Skattebo, as the front office weighs whether to hold steady or listen if the right offer comes along.
Jameis Winston is the one who really adds a jolt to the discussion, because his situation suggests a role that no longer looks as stable as it once did. Add in the fact that the Giants are trying to balance short-term competitiveness with longer-term roster value, and deadline chatter around a player like Winston feels like the sort of thing that could move quickly if the market develops the right way. Giants Suddenly Need Answers From Trace Ford
Trace Fords path to a bigger opportunity with the Giants has opened quickly, and it comes at a time when the team is trying to piece together its edge-rush rotation. New York brought Ford up from the practice squad to the active roster while moving on from Jihad Ward, a roster shuffle that signals the club wants a better look at what Ford can offer beyond spot duty.
Ford has appeared in three games, with seven tackles and no starts or sacks, so the next step is less about projecting production and more about finding out whether he can handle a more defined role on passing downs. With the Giants dealing with injuries around the edge, the evaluation matters now, and Ford suddenly has a chance to show whether he can be part of the answer rather than just an emergency add.
